Cannonball Essentials
Yeah, I got on okay.
Jazz Times, pfft. Don’t get me started on the fools in the subscription department.
Thankfully the editorial department and the subscription department stay far apart. It’s a nice list and most of the tracks are available on good old Tidal and Qobuz. Nicely curated and a fine introduction to Cannonball’s music.
While looking for the soundtrack to the 1981 cartoon ‘Heavy Metal’, I stumbled across this-
Another side and sound of the late Michael Brecker. Doesn’t appear to be available on Tidal or Qobuz but well worth seeking out. The review on All Music Guide is spot on.

It’s available on Qobuz in this neck of the woods although I do own the CD but agreed well worth checking out.

Woman has a beautiful voice, but I can’t listen to the songs.
I get the style she’s going for, but I find the lyrics and the attitude (on her latest release) way too submissive and needy.
Nina Simone did it better, IMO.
A new historic release just in time for the holidays and something that all jazz devotees can agree on. Not yet available on Tidal or Qobuz (although I do suspect that it will be available shortly). The playing is wonderful and the recording is first rate with great instrumental balance and crystal clear sound.
