Isaac Hayes, was in the vanguard of spoken word soul in 1970 when this came out:
Forty years later this extremely angry chap sampled it on this existential rant - love the verse re. the credulity of the album buying public:
Phew, something mellow required after that. Please note that as far as I know, Norman had no formal naval training:

I love how after a minute or so the auto-tuning is dropped. Like someone told him to cut that out. Or he was just playing with us and knew all along.
Beautiful track after that initial auto-tuned intro.
I’m not against auto-tune either - I love it (as well as the classic talk-box of course) when it’s used well.
Now that enough time has passed (this was in too much rotation everywhere for a while), I can finally start to enjoy this.

This may be at the fringes, but the hooks, grooves and time spent in the pocket add up to Funk for me!

Did he ever do a record with Tennille?
Solid record, BTW. Thanks for the tip.

Sadly no. The most action Norman ever saw was a few debauched weekends on the Love Boat with Robert Goulet, Peter Graves and Lynda Day George. Captain Daryl - as an ex-Navy Seal - was rather dismissive of Norman’s modest naval skills and would have nothing to do with him. I feel Toni Tennille may have been up for it though. We’ll never know.

One of my all time favourite tracks.
It’s also one (of many) tracks I’ve used in the past to demo gear. For some reason the second half causes some systems to really sound confused.
Anyway that’s too much HiFi talk - I love the song (and album)
Brilliant production. Play it loud
Gary @connoleg you must have had some Minto Condition in rotation during your DJ’ing days?
