Possibly the very best recordings I have are RCA living stereo pressings from the 50’s. Both Swedien the mix engineer and Jones have their roots in that era and Swedien won his first Grammy nomination in 1962 (Frankie Valli, Big Girls Don’t Cry) so by the time Michael came along you can assume they were pretty good at their craft! Back when I was obsessed with such things I had this on CD and assumed it was an all digital recording (not a bad thing when done properly) because of the quietness of the background and production values. But this was put down on analogue tape! Remastering does nothing for these peoples work. They were usually spot on, first time!
All oh so true Henry! The only non-early pressing CD (i.e the only later release) that I like is the DSD version of Thriller from AcousticStore. It seems that kept the high DR of the early CD pressing but most other re-mastered versions sound bad, as you hinted too.
And yes I’m still trying to catchup with all of Q’s pre-Michael big band stuff! It’s quite the body of work! I’m loving his Count Basie stuff at the moment.
It’s time for the Gents to step up! This year has been owned by the Ladies, in terms of great new R&B albums.
Sza, Kelela, Jhene Aiko, just to name a few.
And you can add this talented lady to the list. Great new album, now streaming on Tidal.
Classic 90’s R&B
The ladies are really owning 2017, regarding this years best new albums.
Another one…
This band sounds like they could steal the show at a 100,000 people music festival. A little like Snarky Puppy - their albums are so good but when I saw them live, people were running from the other live shows at the festival to get to their gig, even without knowing who was playing.
Thanks for sharing this gem !
Stretching this topic…but man this is good, Eddie Hazel’s work is amazing.
This guy graduated from Harvard in Political Science - at the age of 19.
I was onto his music talent from when he was posting ‘making of’ videos on YouTube, him in the studio making tracks.
I’ve always loved the sound of the drums on this track.
New solo album from the lead singer of Hiatus Kaiyote, one of my favorite groups.
Australia representin!
Great group and great album from their lead there!
Marvin Gaye --> Sade --> Maxwell
Lots of new music released today on Tidal.
For any 90’s R&B fans here - they’re back with a new album !
This album was a big part of my high school days but I’m starting to feel old because a few young artists this year have sampled this track and this album in general.
This album is too damn young to be sampled !!
All jokes aside, it makes me happy to see the new generation of R&B artists showing respect to an album I consider a classic
Ahhh so many great new albums out
