Nucleus One - connected via ethernet. All remote streamers work fine. No sound output from Nucleus connected via HDMI to pioneer elite SC-77 av reciever. It worked for a while and then stopped. Shows Roon server info on TV connected to SC-77. Roon app shows tracks playing. but no sound.
Thank you for your post. RoonServer diagnostics show Roon upsampling everything to 32-bits for this HDMI input. Can you please share a screenshot of the Signal Path in the configuration that is currently failing to play audio?
Are you using the Hi-Bit32 feature mentioned in this device product manual? If so, our understanding is that the unit would upsample internally, and expect 16-24-bits on the input from the source.
Does this occur regardless of the format selected, and with all DSP disabled?
Here is the signal path. Also The audio scaler function on the SC77 is currently set to Auto. This means the Hi-bit 32 is set to ON. The digital filter is set to SHARP and upsampling is set to X4. When I switch it to manual, (Hi-bit 32 set off, digital filter off and upsampling set to X1) Still no sound.
(incredible record by the way - very much looking forward to the new LP dropping soon!)
Lets see if refreshing your Nucleus RAATServer database may help as well:
You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:
If you have a Nucleus One, then the correct network location is \\nucleusone\Data.
Also, be aware that Microsoft has recently tightened security that affects network access.
The username and password is still guest and guest, to access Roon OS, but now you have to tell Windows that it’s OK to connect to your Nucleus One system as well.
Read this article on how to solve it. Start at step 6 if you have Windows 11 Pro, or step 8 if you have Windows 11 Home.
@Geoff_Coupe is absolutely correct - my apologies for not being more specific in my directions. Let me know if you’re able to reset your RAATServer database settings afterwards and if it helps!
Yes, I was able to reset the RAATserver. AND the Nucleus One played through HDMI just fine - But only briefly. After the initial success, I tried to play it again later but again - no sound via HDMI. The nucleus continues to be able to serve the other nodes on the system but not HDMI.
Sorry if this has been glazed over - but does this happen no matter the file format? I see playback via HDMI over a MQA 44.1kHz track - specifically:
Trace: [RaatSender] [Family Room Nucleus] [Enhanced 28.0x, 16/44 MQA TIDAL FLAC => 24/88 MQA] [100% buf] [PLAYING @ 2:55/11:26] Feel Like a Stranger (Live at Smoothie King Center, New Orleans, LA 2/24/18) - Dead & Company
Does this happen no matter the HDMI port you use on the Nucleus? It’s interesting, refreshing your RAATServer helped for a short time. Which track specifically did it fail on?
We’ll need to take your case to our development time for further analysis in the meantime. Thank you for your continued patience!
I may have stumbled on a clue. I tried changing the input and cable again. I got playback on the Nucleus one via HDMI. So I tried a number of other tracks. It turned out that I could only get playback on files that were either 48kHz or 96kHz. My library has files at sample rates including 22.05kHz (2
albums) , 44.1kHz (1520 albums), 48 kHz (90 albums),88.2KHz (10 albums) 96 kHz (103 albums) and 176.4 kHz (1 album). Does this information help troubleshoot this issue? I’ll wait to do a RoonOS re-install until I hear back from you.
Thanks for the update here, that is a very interesting observation. Please go ahead with the Operating System reinstall. Additionally, I wonder if going to Roon MUSE (DSP Engine) and setting a force resample of all content to 48/96/192 temporarily bypasses this issue.
Forcing resample of all content does the trick. I’m able to get HDMI playback on everything. Will doing the OS reinstall possibly eliminate the need to resample?
Hi @Peter_Solomon,
I’m really glad to hear that the resample idea worked for you! Reinstalling the OS might also help, and if you’ve got a backup, there’s no downside to giving it a shot. If you decide to go ahead with it, we’d appreciate hearing how it turns out—just let us know!
Thanks for sharing your findings! It’s great to hear that your NUC’s HDMI output to your TV plays 44.1kHz, 48kHz, and 192kHz streams without any trouble — that confirms there isn’t a broader HDMI issue.
From what you’ve described, it sounds like your DAC may only support certain sample rates over HDMI — likely 44.1kHz, 48kHz, and 192kHz — which aligns with how HDMI audio can sometimes behave similarly to S/PDIF in terms of supported formats.
To ensure smooth playback with other sample rates, we recommend enabling sample rate conversion in MUSE for this specific zone. You can set it to convert unsupported sample rates to either 48kHz or 96kHz, depending on what works best with your setup.
