Nucleus is very slow and takes several minutes to reboot [Investigating]

Roon Server Machine

Nucleus+, build 1359. updated to 980Pro M.2 SSD, Fury 32GB RAM. 8TB 870QVO internal drive.
Mac OS and iOS remotes

Networking Gear & Setup Details

Frontier 1GB fiber
TPLink/Omada router, switches and WAPs. Nucleus connected via ethernet (don’t worry, I’ve tested with direct connection to router and via unmanaged switches, the results are the same).

Connected Audio Devices

UltraRendu/Brooklyn DAC+ (ethernet connected)
Seven misc Sonos endpoints (wired mode, i.e. one AMP is connected via ethernet, the others connect via Sonosnet) .

Number of Tracks in Library

1096 Artists, 5616 Albums, 96101 tracks. 95% are local files, small amount of Tidal and Qobuz.
All local files are on the internal SSD and well organized in category/artist/album/track structure.
Several artists with over 1000 tracks, including one with 13,000 tracks.
Large number of concert recordings from a small number of artists - 791 albums and >17,000 tracks are unidentified, but have detailed metadata in the files. They are very well organized using standard artist/album/track.

Description of Issue

Search is very slow since Roon 2.0. Mostly in Tracks view, it takes 20-60 seconds to respond to filters, focus and tag searches. Other elements of the UI are slow to respond, e,g. editing Tags.
Sometimes there is a pause between tracks during playback. More often with Sonos rather than via the ultraRendu.
Nucleus reboots within 20 seconds (ie.g web page says it is running) ,however Roon remote will show the pulsing Roon logo for another 2+ minutes before being functional.
None of this was an issue prior to Roon 2.0 with essentially the same hardware and library. About four months ago, I updated the internal M.2, RAM and SSD local storage on the Nucleus and there was no change, maybe searches are a little faster but they are still dreadfully slow…

AFAIK Roon loads the library at boot so it’s track no dependent for your track count 2 mins sounds Ok

Last time I timed mine it was 2-3 minutes

Patience is s virtue :sunglasses:

Search is another subject, Support would prefer one item per request …

Hey @HeavyMetalDrummer,

Thanks for writing in and providing your own experience with Nucleus performance issues.

As you’ve mentioned above, 17k unidentified tracks will undoubtedly put some weight on your Nucleus performance. And while we definitely appreciate proper organization, if the local files are not associated with a distributor or have an official release, Roon won’t be able to recognize them.

Our team is still investigating these performance issues tied to larger libraries with unidentifiable content, but I do want to note that Roon wasn’t ever built to be a file management system to handle large amounts of non-identifiable tracks.

I will keep you and the others in the loop on how things progress. Just to ensure proper expectations are met - this issue (if you haven’t already realized) is, unfortunately, a bit of a slow burner. We appreciate all your patience you’ve had so far.

@Benjamin Thanks for the reply, I appreciate your explanation. It helps to finally have an idea of the root of the problem. Although it doesn’t give me much hope of resolving this.

I get your point about Roon not being designed as a file manager, its not a folder-browsing solution, and I don’t want it to be one. I agree on that. But the part about Roon not being able to handle non-identifiable tracks well is curious, since Roon is promoted as a way to “bring all your music together”. Not just “all your music that can be recognized by our metadata providers”. And I never had these issues with my library before Roon 2.0.

Roon has the ability to include unidentified content. It just no longer performs well when you have a lot of it. Still feels like something is broken.

Hey @HeavyMetalDrummer,

Thanks for the response - I certainly empathize with your frustration, especially when you haven’t made any sudden changes to your setup or local library.

Our developers would like to study your specific situation, if possible, would you be able to zip up your current database and send a copy over to our team for further investigation?

At your convenience, please navigate to your DB location, compress it into a ZIP file, and upload it here.

Thank you!

Thanks for sending your DB over @HeavyMetalDrummer, our team has some next steps to investigate - I hope to have more information to share soon. :+1:

@Benjamin any update? Have they taken a look at my database? I just updated to 2.0.29 and things are as slow as ever. Thanks for your help.

Hey @HeavyMetalDrummer,

Thanks for the update - and I’m sorry to hear the recent update didn’t help with your performance issues. Our team has reviewed your database, but no conclusions have been made and the investigation is still ongoing.

Do you experience the same dip in performance when using Roon in offline mode?

Thanks for the reply - not sure what you mean by “offline mode”? Do you mean just disabling my internet access?

Hey @HeavyMetalDrummer,

Yes exactly - apologies for the lack of clarity on my part. We’re investigating a few different areas that could be dampening performance, and since your library is 95% local files, I’m curious if performance changes at all when not online.
