Nucleus One fails to import FLAC files after manual transfer (ref#NBWWPX)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· Nucleus One with 2-TB internal SSD for music storage, managed from a Windows 11 PC. Software for both Nucleus and Roon app is version 2.57 (build 1598). Transferred a large amount of music in FLAC format (exported from a Sooloos store) from a drive in my PC to the Nucleus by dragging from File Explorer to the My Albums area of the Roon app interface. Later ripped a multidisc set with dBPoweramp to FLAC files and imported the same way. Worked, except the last of the four discs was treated as separate from the set, so I deleted all of it via the app. Ripped something else same way and dragged it to the library, and Roon acted like it was importing it but just gave me a spinning circle, stuck at the first track, and never actually transferred anything. Repeated efforts yielded the same thing.

Brought this up on the forum. Was suggested that I transfer the files directly by copying from File Explorer to the InternalStorage folder on the Nucleus drive. Did this, but music doesn't show up in the My Albums display. That folder has a subfolder named Roon Imports, which in turn has a subfolder named MICHAEL-PC that contains 16 folders named by date and time when the music files they contain were imported. I tried moving the new files to the Roon Imports subfolder, but still didn't register, and then to the MICHAEL-PC folder, still nothing.

Tell us about your home network

· Router is a Verizon-branded Actiontec MI424WR-GEN3I. There is a Dell 24-port switch connected to the router. My PC is connected directly to the router, the Nucleus to the switch. No VPN. Have not had any trouble communicating with the Nucleus.

Hi @Michael_Riggs,

Thank you for your detailed description of your troubleshooting so far.

The important distinction is between how Roon “imports” files and how it “watches” storage. These are two different mechanisms within RoonOS and you’ve accidentally ended up straddling both.

When you drag files into My Albums, Roon doesn’t just copy them like Windows. It uploads them through Roon’s managed import system, which stores files under InternalStorage/Roon Imports/… and immediately tries to analyze and add them to the database as a single transaction. After you deleted the multi-disc set, that import pipeline appears to have gotten stuck, which is why subsequent drag-and-drop attempts never complete and sit spinning on the first track.

This is what other users were referring to here in your previous thread.

The Roon Imports folder (and its MICHAEL-PC subfolders) is not a watched music location. It’s an internal staging area that Roon only uses when it performs an import. Manually copying or moving files anywhere inside that folder will not trigger a scan, which is why nothing you placed there ever appeared in My Albums.

The fix is to bypass the importer entirely by adding a watched folder and then actually force a manual rescan:

  1. Create a normal music folder on the Nucleus, e.g. InternalStorage/Music.
  2. In Settings → Storage, add that folder as a watched location.
  3. Copy your FLAC files directly into that folder from File Explorer.
  4. Let Roon rescan (or trigger a manual rescan).
If you don’t see the content imported, confirm whether you see the Nucleus internal storage listed in your Watched Folders.

In the previous thread, it looks like you performed step 1 and step 3, but without adding the location as a Watched Folder (step 2) and forcing the rescan in Roon Settings (step 4), the Nucleus won’t know to look for and ingest the newly copied music.

Please let us know if this helps.

Thanks for the prompt response. Used File Explorer to create a Music folder in InternalStorage (couldn’t find a way to create a folder via the app). Went to Storage in Settings and clicked “Add folder”, but no folders are listed there. Storage does indicate Nucleus One Internal Storage “watching for new files in real time”. One other oddity I forgot to mention. If I click Folders on the Roon app interface, it shows the Roon Imports folder and also a MICHAEL-PC folder, separate from the one in the Roon Imports folder, which contains one date/time-of-import folder that in turn contains a list of files I previously deleted. Seems like it’s sort of a ghost folder.

You’re doing it wrong. That procedure is for adding additional watched folders in addition to the default Internal Storage watched folder that has been created by Roon Server.

The “Choose music storage” folder will be blank unless you have a USB drive attached to your Nucleus or until you have added Network Shared folders.

It is a ghost folder. If you deleted the album from your Roon library, Roon removes it from your database and will delete the audio files, but it does leave the folder and any non-audio files (e.g. cover art jpegs or PDFs) in place. You will have to use Windows File Explorer to delete these files and folders manually if you want to clean things up.

It comes about because Roon originally did not have folder browsing, navigation and browsing of the Roon library was done solely by using the other browsers (e.g. Album, Track, Artist, Composer and Composition). Some users did not like this and wanted folder browsing as found in traditional media players.

Thanks for clarifying. As for the ghost folder, it doesn’t show up in File Explorer, which is why I was surprised to find it in Roon’s folder view. The other odd thing is that it has the same name as the folder inside Roon Imports folder that actually holds my imported files, other than the stray, deleted disc that is in the ghost folder. That disc is the last disc of a multidisc set I tried to import; the remains of the other discs (also deleted) are in the other folder. I brought this up because I thought it might be a clue. My troubles started after that import.

Have you done a Library cleanup? In Roon’s Settings > Library > Library maintenance.

No, but have been thinking about it. Trying to tread carefully given the circumstances but will give it a shot.

Just tried it. Showed 0 files for each of the three categories, but I checked them all anyway and ran the tool. Appears to have changed nothing.

Also, please note what Connor (tech support) told me to do. He seems to think I can add a folder in InternalStorage and then make it a watched location. I can create the folder, but I can’t make the system see it. All very confusing and frustrating.

Hey @Michael_Riggs,

Thanks for all the additional information and troubleshooting so far, and apologies for any confusion here. For the internal music storage folder within your Nucleus, it should already be listed, and actively watched within Roon Settings>Storage.

If possible, would you be able to share a screenshot of your current Storage settings page?

With that, can you share the names of the specific albums you’re having issues with? We’ll enable diagnostics on your Nucleus to take a closer look behind the scenes.

Thank you! :raising_hands:

Screenshots attached. The trouble started when I imported a box set, Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet: Complete Studio Recordings. Worked the first time except one of the four discs wound up being listed separately instead of within the set, so I deleted all of it via the Roon app and started over. Subsequent import attempt failed. Later tried to import a couple of single discs, Quincy Jones Ultimate Collection and William Clarke: Blowin’ Like Hell. Those also failed, regardless of method used, direct copy or drag-and-drop. Do you think it might help to force a library rescan?

Hello @Michael_Riggs,

Thanks for the screenshots and the additional details.

As a next step, please try the following in this order:

  1. Restart the Nucleus One and wait until it is fully back online.
  2. From your Windows PC, copy the FLAC files via SMB directly into the Nucleus internal storage (for example into a normal music folder under InternalStorage).
  3. Once the copy is complete, go to Roon Settings → Storage, click the three dots next to Nucleus One Internal Storage, and select Force rescan.

This will ensure the files are picked up through Roon’s normal storage monitoring rather than the managed import pipeline.

Please let us know if the albums appear after the forced rescan, or if the behavior remains unchanged.

Seems to be fixed now. Thanks to everyone for your help.
