Nucleus One Internal/External Drive formats - max internal drive size limits

I have an exFat formatted external 6TB USB hard drive installed on my Nucleus One and all is fine except I’d like to reorg/defragment it. Windows does not allow this. Any way the Nucleus can reorg it?

Secondly, I’d like to use an internal drive. I have asked before, but I’ve seen multiple answers: what is the upper limit of the disk drive size (SSD or HDD) for the internal storage on the Nucleus one?

Why? If you’ve only added media to the drive, this won’t be necessary. Fragmentation only occurs when continuously writing and deleting files. Anyway, Windows doesn’t defragment exFAT, and there are no such tools for the Nucleus.

Data size, as opposed to physical? I don’t think there’s any in the realm of real-life sizes.

To answer your question about SSD storage: Roon OS does not actually have a strict maximum storage capacity limit for the drives themselves (for example, you can safely connect 4TB, 8TB, or even larger drives). The real limitation is the number of tracks and how that impacts the internal memory (RAM) of the Nucleus One.

The Nucleus One is optimized to handle libraries of up to roughly 100,000 tracks (about 10,000 albums). As long as your total track count stays within that range, the physical size in terabytes of the SSDs won’t be an issue.

I have <70,000 tracks, so well within the Nucleus One limits. Most of these tracks are hi-res, so my music library is almost 4TB (not GB). I’ve seen contradicting info on these pages suggesting 4TB is all that is supported. Other places say otherwise. I’m trying to determine why the Nucleus is so slow to respond (song starts, art presentation, boot time, etc). So, I’d like to get a 5-6TB internal drive installed.

I’ve added tracks, transferred and restored the drive, etc. Just would like to make sure there is no fragmentation that may be slowing the Nucleus down.

Fragmentation would not cause the Nucleus to slow down since a four minute FLAC file would load into memory in seconds.

If you have performance issues, you should open a Support request.

Well that’s wrong. The quote in my above post is from official support, and there are various people on the forum who have 8 TB internal at least.

I had a tech tell me 4TB was the limit, but that didn’t make sense to me. I may try a larger size internal disk. Thanks!

DEFRAGGER! I’d long ago forgotten it. You are correct - the drive was only 4% fragmented. But good to know. Thanks!
