Nucleus One media playback issues with fast-forward sound and freezing (ref#L7F707)

What’s happening?

· I am experiencing freezes or crashes

Describe the issue

I have a nucleus one. Feed to Naim Atom and QB as well as Lumin U1Mini. Server is seen on Roon app as are the nodes. Media (via live radio or tidal) will play for a second then sound as if tape is being fast-forwarded then the system(s) will freeze. After rebooting the nucleus, album art will appear, but no audio. Same for all devices. Wifi connection via Mesh. System used to work until about a week ago. Have reloaded system software, rebooted both nucleus and wifi a number of times.

Describe your network setup

Gig speed modem to ORBI 770 router with 1 Orbi satellite and wifi 6 AX3000 WIFI to ethernet bridge for Lumin.

Hi @Trent_Robbins,
Thanks for reaching out to us to report this issue. I think the next step here is to enable some diagnostics on your account so our technical staff can get some more insight into what’s going on here.

However, before I enable this feature, I’d like to ask for your help ensuring we gather the right information.

First, can you please reproduce the issue once more and note the time at which the error occurs. Then respond here with that time, and I’ll make sure we review the diagnostics related to that timestamp.

OK, will do. Do you have a preference if I use the desktop or app version of ROON? Any preference for which playback system?

Ok. I tried to play a single from the Roon App on my desktop (MacBook Pro) on a Naim Atom at 14:34 Pacific Time. I rebooted the Nucleus just prior. Album art appeared, then heard the “fast forward” sound for a second or two then dropped and froze.

Hi @Trent_Robbins,
Thanks for the timestamps. I reviewed your logs using those timestamps. It looks like what happening is your endpoints are trying to play files at a higher sample rate than they were recorded at. Can you share a screenshot of any DSP settings you have set up? Also if you have and app for controlling these endpoints make sure there aren’t any settings there locking the speaker to a higher sample rate.

Thank you Daniel. It’s odd that it is happening with all the endpoints (the 2 Naims and the Lumin). I’ll attach what I have for the Lumin and Naim Atom. Let me know if you need something else (might need an explanation of where to get that)

Are you doing grouped playback? Try playing to Lumin only and see if the same problem occurs.

No. I’ve been playing each on their own and the Naim’s and the Lumin respond roughly the same. Title, track etc. will display on the Lumin, fast forward sound then freeze. I’ve updated the Lumin firmware and app as well. As an aside, the Lumin and Naim’s will play fine directly from their apps (lumin radio) or air play, but not from Roon.

Hey @Trent_Robbins,

While those screenshots are also helpful - are you able to also share a screenshot of your signal path when the issue is occurring?

Let’s also refresh your RAATServer settings in the meantime as well.

You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon Database
  • Stop RoonServer from running in Nucleus’s WebUI
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
  • Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
  • Restart the RoonServer in the WebUI to generate a new RAATServer

Thank you Benjamin. I’ll try the refresh. In the meantime, here is the path when I try to play something on the Lumin/Chord. Signal path: Lossy

That’s unusual.

  1. Try logging out of Tidal, re-logging in with a paying account, and set Roon to use the highest quality for Tidal.
You should be seeing FLAC in most Tidal albums.
  1. You are doing upsampling. Don’t. Instead, you should disable Roon DSP Engine when you’re having a playback problem.

Thank you all. I’ve got it up and running again. Bringing the Nucleus back to default worked. Now I’ll have to play with the settings again to get it back to where it was. Thank you again.
