· The Nucleus boots up and I can connect to it in the Roon app without issue, but I have a question about configuration/storage/attached devices
Describe the issue
It’s me again. I’m the guy that was using my MacBook Air as a server and then decided to use a Nucleus One. The MacBook Air has been turned off as the primary server. The Nucleus One indicates that it is connected to my server. All ROON apps on MacBook, iPad and iPhone see the Nucleus One as being connected, and all devices see the activity I conducted during my two week trial and also see my Tidal account. The problem is that nothing sees my Apple Music Library.
I want the Nucleus One to be the “dominant “ server that sees all my music accounts.
I know that I have been difficult to help. But, I am really trying to make this work. I would really appreciate if someone could talk me through this process.
The reason your Nucleus doesn’t see your Apple Music Library yet is likely because the music files are still physically located on your MacBook Air, and the Nucleus doesn’t have access to them yet.
To make the Nucleus your main server (so it works even when your MacBook is turned off or asleep), you need to move your music files onto the Nucleus.
Here is the best way to do it:
Locate your Music: Find the folder on your MacBook where your Apple Music/iTunes media is stored (usually Music > Media).
Connect to Nucleus: On your MacBook Finder, connect to the Nucleus over the network (it usually appears in the sidebar, or you can use Go > Connect to Server and type smb://NUCLEUSONE/Data/Storage/InternalStorage
Copy the Files: Simply drag and drop your music folder from your Mac into that storage folder on the Nucleus.
Once the files are copied, Roon on the Nucleus will scan them, and your library will appear.
Important Note on “Apple Music”: Roon can only import music files you own (ripped CDs, purchased downloads). It cannot play tracks that are “rented” or streamed via the Apple Music subscription service due to Apple’s copy protection.
Here are two guides that explain these concepts in detail:
I did what you said. But, I got a message that I needed to “authenticate”. I could not find that selection / option. I have copied all the music in my Apple Music account, but I can’t paste / move it.
If you are unable to locate the actual media files themselves, it is possible that the files are being stored with DRM. On your Macbook in the Apple Music library, are you able to open the file location for one of the media files? Does it show a regular music file, and if so what file extension does it have?
I have read every post received, reviewed all the help topics, meticulously tried to follow instructions — nothing works. I have asked time and time again for a human to talk to. Apparently, there is no one at Roon that wants to talk in person to help. It seems like the only thing you can do is point to your Help section. Apple Music might not be perfect but it does work on all my devices and in Car Play whereas the Nucleus One cannot be easily integrated.
I have been messing around with this for weeks. I am going to initiate a return of the Nucleus One and cancel my account.
I’m so sorry to hear you’re still having issues! It is true - all of Roon technical support is handled via the community here, so you are in the right spot. You have our apologies in that we don’t offer phone support at this time.
It does feel like you’re close to success here, but if you’d prefer not to continue troubleshooting, I understand.
That said, when you mention your Apply Music library, are you referring to albums you’ve purchased via Apple Music, or do you only use Apple Music for streaming?
If you have purchased music, to access your purchased Apple Music/iTunes files on a Mac, open the Music app, ensure you are signed in, and go to Account > Purchased in the menu bar. From there, you can click the Download button (cloud icon) to download albums or songs directly to your local library.
Once you do this, you can follow the steps @vadim has mentioned above.
Let us know if this is something you’d consider giving another try, thank you!
