Nucleus One server not detectable in Xfinity network apartment (ref#BG5RV7)

Select your Nucleus model from the list below

· Nucleus One

I'm having trouble with my Nucleus hardware

· Nucleus turns on, but I can't connect to it

Is the Nucleus showing up after pressing the Configure RoonOS button?

· No

Please try to reboot your Nucleus

· false

Please try rebooting your network equipment

Nucleus Factory Reset

The Nucleus HDMI output can provide very useful diagnostic information. This process will involve connecting the Nucleus via HDMI to a TV or monitor and then checking to see what is being displayed.

· Yes, I am willing to try the HDMI test

When you plug in the HDMI cable to the TV or Monitor, is there something being displayed on the screen?

· true

On the Nucleus HDMI output, what do you see?

· "Roon OS Web UI can be directly accessed at [https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/](https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/)" and the address starts WITH [http://169.254.XX.YY/](http://169.254.XX.YY/)

Nucleus Reboot

· false

Sometimes, this issue can be caused by a faulty cable to Ethernet port. To eliminate this possibility, please try to connect the Nucleus to a different port, or try to replace the Ethernet cable

· Using a different port or a different cable did not help fix it

Did bypassing additional network gear resolve the issue ?

· false

IPv6 Network Configuration

· I don't know how to edit IPv6 settings on my router

You can factory reset the Nucleus network settings by plugging in a USB keyboard and having the HDMI connected to a TV or monitor. Please see the steps below and give them a try if possible.

· I reset the network settings, but I'm still having an issue

Sometimes firewalls on the router level or misconfigured router settings can prevent a Nucleus from getting a proper IP address.

· false

If you have or are willing to purchase a USB to Ethernet adapter, you can try to plug it in to the Nucleus to confirm if the Nucleus port is having issues.

· I tried using a USB to Ethernet adapter, but that failed as well

To better assist, we'll need to have a comprehensive overview of your network setup.

· I have a Roon Nucleus 1 connected to a ruckus ethernet router which has wall ethernet ports to which I have connected via several different ethernet ports

Describe the issue

Hi, I live in an apartment that uses Xfinity, has a router in my apartment, as well as ethernet ports across the apartment. Some weeks ago, the Nucleus One server stopped working. I have tried every possibility that is listed on this website. I would appreciate some step by step help to figure out what is going wrong. The server cannot be located no matter what I try.

Hey @Joel_Lande.

Thanks for the screenshot and the extra network details, that helps narrow this down.

The address shown on HDMI is a self-assigned IP, which means the Nucleus One is not getting a proper address from the router. Since you have already tried alternate Ethernet ports, a different cable, a USB to Ethernet adapter, and a network settings reset, the next thing we want to check is whether Xfinity Constant Guard is enabled on the apartment network. We have seen that setting interfere with connectivity in some cases.

Please let us know whether Constant Guard is turned on, and if the Nucleus shows up at all in your router and we will take it from there.

I’m afriad that I cannot figure out where I would be able to access that information. I’ve tried going through the Xfinity app and log in.

Could you provide me with any further information?

I thought it might be the firewall on my computer, which is provided through my job, but logging in through my cell phone makes no difference.

Do you have any other suggestions of what I might do?

Hey @Joel_Lande.

Thanks for checking the Xfinity app. Since you are not able to find that setting there, the next thing we need is the exact model of your Xfinity router so we can point you to the right guide.

In the meantime, please try connecting the Nucleus via HDMI again with a display and keyboard, then type “resetnetwork” to reset the network settings. Also, please confirm from the router side that the Nucleus is not assigned a manual IP address, and that it is set to DHCP(Automatic IP assignment).

Please send back the router model when you have it, and we will take it from there.

Thanks,
Looking forward to your reply.

Hi @Joel_Lande,

We haven’t seen any activity in diagnostics associated with this Nucleus One so we wanted to check back in on this thread.

What do you see when you connect the HDMI output of the Nucleus to a display/monitor/TV?

I typed resetnetwork as you suggested and still I cannot connect from other Roon devices.

It tells me that the Roon OS UI can be directly accessed at http://169.254.8.2/

But I don’t know how that helps me. I want to use the Nucleus One as my core and not my MacBook Pro.

So what should I do now?

A 169.254 address means that the Nucleus couldn’t get an IP address from your router. The most likely cause is the network or router, e.g., a misconfiguration or fault.

So what should I do with the router? It was working until 3 weeks ago and then suddenly stopped.

Well, the first thing I’d try is a different ethernet port on the router (or switch if you are using one). If that doesn’t change things, then reboot the router.

Also, I didn’t see where you provided the model number for your router after it was asked for..

I am a bit confused now about what to do. I live in an Avalon apartment building, which provides the internet service through Xfinity. There is a Ruckus router mounted to the ceiling of the loft. As near as I can tell, though, I don’t have a way of taking it down to locate the serial number.

Hi @Joel_Lande,

Thanks for the update! Based on all the information provided so far, it does sound like accessing your router and router settings would be the best next step here.

If possible, are you able to plug the Nucleus directly into one of the open Ethernet ports on the back of the Xfinity modem or the Ruckus router, bypassing the wall ports entirely?

Are you able to access your Xfinity app to check if the Nucleus is being recognized at all? It could also be listed under an Unknown Device.

Do you have any sort of media cabinet by chance? Most ceiling-mounted Ruckus units are powered via PoE. Look for a small black box (a PoE Injector) or a Ruckus “Switch” where all the Ethernet cables from your walls plug in.

  • Unplug the power cord to that switch or injector for 30 seconds, then plug it back in. This will force the ceiling unit to reboot and hopefully start "handing out" IP addresses again.
It may be worth getting in touch with whoever manages the network as well; sometimes, they limit the number of devices that can be plugged into wall ports. If you recently added a new smart TV, console, or computer, you might have hit a "device limit" set by the building's IT.

Thanks, Joel!
