· The Nucleus boots up and I can connect to it in the Roon app without issue, but I have a question about configuration/storage/attached devices
Describe the issue
I recently purchased a nucleus one and it updates, looses connection, and hangs while I am listening to music. Nothing network related as I moved from a linux server with a fourth gen i7 and 16GB or ram. Is the nucleus lessor than my old hardware or do you have issues with your config and software. Love roon, but ready to return or ■■■■ can this thing.
The Nucleus One ships with 8GB of RAM, which does represent a significant downgrade in raw performance power from a 16GB i7, but whether the Nucleus One is insuffucient for your needs will depend significantly on your library size, DSP use, and other factors.
However, we’ve noticed that some of your Roon remotes are on separate VLANs from the Nucleus itself - keep in mind that device announcements won’t cross subnets, so you’ll lose sight of the server on any device that switches subnets.
Diagnostic logging from the Nucleus One associated with your account show both 1) generic network errors with upstream services and also 2) serverside buffer overruns on multiple endpoints.
The first symptom is most commonly the result of overzealous network security software that filters out Roon traffic. I’d also ensure that a reliable DNS server is assigned in the router (QuadNine, 9.9.9.9, or Cloudflare, 1.1.1.1). This will help ensure track URLs for Tidal and Qobuz can resolve reliably, preventing hangs with streaming tracks.
As for dropouts to Zones due to buffer problems, try disabling all DSP and playing a low-quality FLAC or mp3 file to a networked endpoint. See if you can reproduce any instability or dropouts under those playback conditions, and then slowly add DSP elements back in.
Thanks for sticking with us on this. I know you don’t think this is a network issue, but we are seeing some signs of one in the logs. Before moving ahead with a RAM upgrade, I’d suggest trying the steps @connor recommended (particularly the DNS servers he recommended).
They won’t cost anything, can be done more quickly, and require a lot less effort than installing new RAM. So it makes sense to rule out network factors first. We’ll still send you RAM upgrade instructions via private message in case you want to go that route afterward.
We wanted to check in since some time has passed. Secure diagnostics that activate automatically alongside this thread indicate that you might have logged in on the Nucleus since your last post.
Did reassigning the DNS server relieve symptoms? We’re eager to pull new logs and identify a next step if you’re still having trouble.
Otherwise, this thread will auto-close due to inactivity after another few days, requiring you to open a new topic thread to continue the conversation. Thanks!
DNS settings went from 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 to 9.9.9.9 & 8.8.8.8 with zero effect on my system. I was amazed that you claim 4GB can handle 10k albums and 100k tracks. Not true at all and probably creating a ton of extra service tickets. I upgraded to 32GB of ram and have not seen an issue yet. I have only had today to really test so I will give it some time to see what the new baseline will be for performance.
Thanks for the update - great work with the RAM upgrade! I’m glad to hear things have proven smoother for you so far.
I’ll go ahead and mark your reply as a solution for now, but it’ll allow you another 24 hours to test and ensure things continue to function properly for you.
We’ll be monitoring for any updates in the meantime!
