Nucleus rev.B causes home network issues during music playback (ref#MIE622)

What’s happening?

· Other – My issue isn’t listed above

Describe the issue

About 2 years ago, I updated to ROON 2.0 on my Nucleus rev.B and on my iPad. This process forced me to upgrade my MacBook Pro Operating System to OS15 (Catalina). This MacBook Pro upgrade also forced a change from the iTunes program to the Music program which was used to manage my music library. It was apparently unknown to ROON that 2.0 does not work with the Music program. It took me a while to realize this problem and I did not take advantage of the reinstall 1.8 option. I also thought and hoped that ROON would be able to solve the problem with 2.0 and the Music program. It is apparent that a solution will not happen and I began the process of reinstalling 1.8.

I had my MacBook Pro wiped clean and had OS 14 and iTunes installed by an Apple retailer for $120 a few months ago. I also recently had 1.8 reinstalled on my Nucleus rev.B and iPad by the retailer that sold and did the install of the Nucleus for $199. I was also successful at reinstalling an older iTunes Music Library onto the Nucleus (1.2T, 30hrs) with the Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) program.

My music system uses a home, hardwired, ethernet network. The iPad, of course, uses Wi-Fi. There is also an internet connection with a modem/router.

I am able to play my music library files with the iPad and with ROON 1.8 and the iTunes Library on the Nucleus. However, it is not without problems.

The main problem:

When using the iPad and playing music, the home ethernet does not work. All the other devices on the home network cannot access the internet while the Nucleus is working. When I physically turn off the Nucleus, the internet becomes available on the home network without any apparent damage.

Also, on the iPad, a spinning icon appears in the upper right hand corner of the screen. It never stops spinning. Apparently 1.8 is looking for something and can’t find it????

Also, in the past when my system was working perfectly under 1.8, the Data file icon from the Nucleus would appear on my MacBook Pro desktop screen which I could easily open. The Data icon has not appeared yet????

I’m hoping ROON can solve these three problems???

Hey @Richard_Caspari,

Thanks for writing in and sharing your report!

Can you provide a bit more detail around what you’re referring to here?

Outside of that, it looks like you’re suffering from the below three issues:

  1. The home network loses internet when the Nucleus is on
  2. The iPad app shows a constant spinning icon
  3. The Nucleus “Data” share no longer appears on your MacBook Pro desktop
These are all likely related to network configuration or DNS behavior between your router, Nucleus, and upstream services.

Please note that we can definitely help troubleshoot any network-related errors, but Roon 1.8 has been sunset at this point, so there will be no more updates or bug fixes to this legacy version of Roon.

As a first step in troubleshooting, can you please first access the webUI of your Nucleus and share a screenshot? We’ll want to confirm:

  • The Nucleus has a valid IP address (e.g., 192.168.x.x).
  • It’s set to DHCP (automatic), not a static IP that could be conflicting with another device.
  • DNS is set to something reliable (e.g., 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1).
Here is more info on how to access the webUI of your Nucleus:

After that - Power-Cycle the Network (in the correct order)

  1. Turn off everything: modem/router, Nucleus, MacBook, iPad, etc.
  2. Power on modem/router first and let it fully boot (wait 2–3 minutes).
  3. Power on the Nucleus next and let it fully start.
  4. Then power on MacBook and iPad.

If that doesn’t help - if possible:

  • Plug the Nucleus directly into the router, not through a switch.
  • Try a different Ethernet cable.
  • Avoid connecting Nucleus and router through a mesh node or Wi-Fi bridge, Roon can behave unpredictably over mixed topologies.
Also, on the iPad, a spinning icon appears
That spinning icon means Roon is “scanning” or trying to connect to a watched folder or service that no longer exists.

On your iPad (in Roon 1.8):

  1. Go to Settings → Storage.
  2. Look for any paths that reference:
    • Old iTunes library paths (like /Volumes/Music/… or a network share that no longer exists).
  3. Disable or remove any missing paths or unreachable folders.
  4. Then re-add the correct folder for your iTunes library on the Nucleus.
That should stop the constant scanning/spinning behavior.

We’ll be on standby for your reply and results! :folded_hands:

I noticed earlier this week that the spinning icon is no longer spinning.

I also noticed that my iPad showed both 1.8 and 2.0 remote apps, but, 2.0 is now no longer on the screen. What could have caused it to disappear?

Rebooting the modem/router with all music system devices off and then starting Nucleus and then my MacBook Pro did not solve the internet access problem with the rest of my computers on the network. The Data file still has not appeared.

The Cisco switch only serves the Home Theater equipment rack. It is not part of the Music System loop. Again, I am able to play my music files without any apparent problems.

Also, I do not have a ROON 1.8 icon/program on my MacBook Pro so I was not able to check the RoonOS webUI. When the Nucleus was first installed by the retailer, he did not do the dynamic/automatic option. By happenstance, in my reading, I discovered the possible problem and made the change. Perhaps the reinstall of 1.8 also has a default “static” setting??? Also, If my memory is correct, the 1.8 program was on the desktop after the reinstall, but, it didn’t work and then later disappeared like the 2.0 remote app on the iPad???

Also, I had numerous problems when I did the 2.0 upgrade. The main problem that caused my pursuit of a reinstall of 1.8 was that my MacBook Pro was slowing down and operating very slowly - actually unusable. I have seen numerous complaints on the internet - too many to remember. Here is a link to one I saw recently:

How to Make Roon Apple Music Integration.

I did not do anything other than read the first page of the link. I have no idea what “native” means!

Thanks for your quick response to my request!

Hi @Richard_Caspari,

Thanks for the follow-up, I think there’s a bit of confusion here that I’d be happy to clear up.

Roon 1.8 and Roon 2.0 are two different mobile apps - since youre running Roon 1.8 as your server, Roon 2.0 will not work. You can either delete it, or ignore it moving forward.

You don’t need Roon to access the webUI of your Nucleus - please review the link I’ve shared above. You can access the webUI using a normal internet browser and by typing the IP address of your Nucleus into the URL.

If you’re planning on using Roon 1.8, you’ll want to download and install the legacy version of Roon on your Mac. Here’s a link:

If you’re looking to integrate Apple Music streaming within Roon, that isn’t possible. If your local files are hosted via iTunes/Apple Music - that is a different situation and something we can definitely help you with if you’re having trouble there.

Let me know if this helps, and any other questions you may have. Thank you! :+1:
