Nucleus server not respecting scheduled audio analysis times (ref#ET8PES)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· I have a Nucleus Version: 1.0 (build 259) Serial: 48210B25D6E2
Roon Server version 2.70 (build 1671)
My Library settings are set to:
Background Audio Analysis scheduled (5 AM-9 AM), (Lisboa/London time)
On-demand audio analysis speed: Throttled
Background Work also 5 AM-9 AM

The server is not respecting that period. It interrupts the music streaming for music files handling any time along the day. The last issue happened at 22:43 PM last night.

Can you help, please?

Hello @Jose_de_la_Cerda

Thanks for the detailed settings breakdown, that helps.

The “Background Audio Analysis scheduled (5 AM-9 AM)” setting only controls when Roon Server proactively scans your whole library looking for new, unanalyzed tracks. It doesn’t cover a second, separate process called on-demand audio analysis: whenever you play a track that Roon hasn’t analyzed yet, it gets analyzed right at that moment, regardless of the schedule window. That’s by design, so the track gets accurate waveform and loudness data before playback.

So the interruption at 22:43 could be on-demand analysis kicking in on a track Roon hadn’t gotten to yet, rather than the scheduled background job running outside its window.

Could you please check whether the track playing at 22:43 was one you’d played before (already analyzed) or a newer addition to your library? If it was a track Roon hadn’t touched yet, that would point to on-demand analysis rather than the schedule being ignored. If it was a track you know had already been fully analyzed, please let us know, since that would be a different issue and we’d want to look closer.

For reference:

Hello vadim,

Thank you for your explanation. Yes, it could have been a track Roon hadn’t touch before. But it’s very strange to me that, when it happens, Roon stops the music streaming in order to process the new track or album. I usually add new tracks and albums to my library, but that didn’t stop the streaming in the past. This is only happening since a week ago, more or less. So I still don’t consider these stops as usual events. Specially if this feature is present by designe, as you said.

I would appreciate a solution for my technical problem.

As a last resource, and until a best solution is found, what happens if I switch off the on-demand Audio Analysis? Will it be performed in the period between 5 - 9 AM?

José

Hello @Jose_de_la_Cerda

Taking your direct question first: yes. If you set On-demand Audio Analysis to Off, tracks will no longer be analyzed at the moment you play them. They will instead be picked up by the scheduled background pass, which in your case runs between 5 and 9 in the morning.

Two things to be aware of before you do that. Please make sure Background Audio Analysis itself is not set to Off, otherwise nothing gets analyzed at all. And on the first play of a brand new track, before the background pass has reached it, Roon will not yet have waveform or loudness data for it, so the waveform will be missing and Volume Leveling will not apply to that play. Once the overnight pass runs, both appear normally.

For your situation that trade is probably worth making, so it is a reasonable thing to try.

Before you change anything though, we would like to see what is actually happening on your Nucleus at the moment playback stops. Please could you note the exact date, the time and your timezone the next time it happens, along with what was playing, and post it here the same day. Our logs only cover a limited window, so a timestamp sent a few days later usually arrives too late to be useful.

With one accurate timestamp we can look at exactly what your server was doing at that second and confirm what interrupted playback.
