Nucleus Titan Identifying as Nucleus and Slow File Copying Issue (ref#DC09RE)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· My new Nucleus Titan self-identifies as a Nucleus. I've seen this in several places. Most worrying is when I query About in settings (within a client) and click on the information button for the server it says “Hardware Model - Nucleus”.

I have a screen cap of this that gives that and all the other possibly pertinent information.

I also saw it in the name it provided to my router “Nucleus” and in the smb path needed to copy over files to the internal SSD I put in.

All of this is contrary to the info provided in the user manual entries I’ve read in how to bring it up (which say it should be nucleustitan)

This makes me wonder whether I have Nucleus hardware or firmware embedded within a Nucleus Titan shell.

Do I, or did I miss reading something where you changed everything to just Nucleus?

Also – currently copying over my library and it looks like it’ll take about a day and a half to copy over 1.2 TB. FreeFileSync is clocking it at just under 10MB/sec which is 1/3 at best of what I’m used to seeing in similar copies from Linux (the source of this copy) to a Windows box over smb

Tell us about your home network

· Router is a Netgear Orbi Mesh WiFi 6E System [probably not relevant]

One comment on the latter front (slow copy to internal storage): I was planning to copy the music library from an external SSD directly connected to the Nucleus Titan but couldn’t find a way to do it.

AI search on the topic revealed that it was indeed not a supported way to go. Took me less than 20 min to copy the files directly to the SSD on my source machine so was thinking it would be a similar exercise to copy them directly from the SSD to the Roon internal store.

Very disappointing to not be able to do that

Nucleus and Rock units have never been able to copy from an attached USB to an internal drive. The only way to copy music to the internal drive is via the network.

I personally don’t recommend using an internal drive for music storage. Much more flexibility with an external drive, as you can then use the same drive for database backups. You can’t backup the database to the internal drives.

A comment on the former issue (hardware model saying Nucleus rather than NucleusTitan or the like). The OS and server versions you see in the screen cap reflect what they became after I did the recommended update. I wish I’d captured what was there before the update as they seemed quite old. Unfortunately that info is no longer available

I think I agree with you, however there are 2 separate issues here and the passage you quoted from me is not about the copy speed. It’s about whether I got a properly built Titan in the first place

What does it say on the Web Administration Interface page for the Nucleus model?

(The server is currently not currently running because the copy to the internal storage is still in progress. If you need to see more there I can kill it – I’ll probably be doing that anyway shortly, as I’m coming to the conclusion that the internal storage may not be the best way to go)

TBH, I suspect that “Nucleus” is used for all models in the Nucleus product range, but we’ll have to wait for the Support team to weigh in with the definitive answer (after the weekend now).

Not in the past as can be seen in many existing screenshots such as here

(Easy to find many more by searching for „web admin interface titan“)

The OP also wrote this:

And this should definitely not be the case either as evidenced by many forum posts about SMB as well as the docs:

Connect to the network share by typing the following address:

  • For Windows:
    • Nucleus One: \\NUCLEUSONE\Data\Storage\InternalStorage
    • Nucleus Titan: \\NUCLEUSTITAN\Data\Storage\InternalStorage
    • Nucleus: \\NUCLEUS\Data\Storage\InternalStorage
    • Nucleus+: \\NUCLEUSPLUS\Data\Storage\InternalStorage
    • ROCK: \\ROCK\Data\Storage\InternalStorage

Did you reinstall Roon OS? Or are you referring to some other update?

Still, i have never had issues with copying media to my Nucleus(or ROCK based devices), they usually manage somewhere aroun 600-800Mbps on my 1Gb network, which is what one can expect, full throttle..

Yes – thanks for the titan admin page screenshot. Looks like something is definitely amiss in what I was shipped. As I mentioned re the screenshot in my original post the server I was particularly concerned about the “Hardware Model - Nucleus” as it seemed the only point of that would be the differentiation. Seeing how it should look in the admin page adds confirmation to that suspicion

Are you sure you received the actual Titan hardware?

It looks like a titan on the outside for sure. I think they just messed up what was installed in it. Or maybe its just wrong firmware which updates to later versions of the same thing. No idea exactly but its pretty clear it’s not entirely what a titan is supposed to be on the inside

Thanks @Suedkiez - it is very odd. I suspect that @support will ask @bill_hunsicker to do an RMA…

I’m developing a theory/speculation that somehow a prototype got into a box and into the warehouse. (With me as the “lucky winner” of the prototype lottery)

Hi Bill,

I don’t think you have to worry. The Nucleus cases are somewhat tied to the motherboard used due to the milled external rear port holes. For example, there is no way the motherboard used in the One could fit in the Titan, and the other way round. The rear holes would not line up.

The Titan I looked at had an Intel 13th gen motherboard (NUC13ANBi3 to be precise), so maybe a 14th gen motherboard was used instead (it has the same rear connectors), but, I wouldn’t consider that wrong. Roon’s literature doesn’t specify what particular motherboard or CPU is used for the One or the Titan. I suspect so they can change the internals as the supply market dictates.

Perhaps some changes occurred in the OS update to just show the “Family” name of the products. In the system BIOS of the Titan I looked at, in the System Information screen, I noted that the device is listed as “Product Name - Nucleus Titan” and then “Family - Nucleus”. [Note, be careful if you attempt to do this any saved changes in the BIOS settings could impact the computer’s functionality]

You might plug up a monitor and keyboard and watch what is displayed during boot, it might tell you the Model information.

It said Nucleus before the update. I just don’t have any pictures of that

Hello @bill_hunsicker,

Thank you for reaching

Thanks for the report, and I’m sorry to hear you’ve hit some issues with your Nucleus. The best next step here is to get in touch with our RMA department directly, as they’re in charge of all hardware-related Nucleus issues. To do so, open the Typeform link below and select ‘Other’ followed by 'This issue is related to a physical component".

Typeform link : Nucleus Troubleshooting

They’ll help get you sorted out moving forward. Thanks! :+1:

Roon support.

I’ve already requested a return for refund from the order. So what’s the next step to facilitate the RMA for that? I don’t want to do something else that will interfere with just returning it for a refund as that’s the only satisfactory remedy from my perspective at this point. So who do I contact to get RMA for that expedited (the request went in and was acknowledged on Sat 1/10, so today is the first business day after that but I expected to see it move forward today)?
