Nucleus unable to read Samsung T5 external SSD (ref#WH2PHM)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Music won’t play or issues with my library

Music won’t play or issues with my library

· Streaming tracks greyed out or unavailable

Tell us what's going on

· I have a Samsung T7 external SSD containing all of my music attached to my Nucleus and it works fine. A while ago I made a backup of the music on a Samsung T5, but when I plug the T5 into the Nucleus, it doesn’t read it–shows 0 albums, etc. But my Mac Studio does see and play the music on the T5, so the content is there. I’ve tried rebooting everything, including the iPad I use to control the Nucleus but nothing has worked. At the suggestion of a community member, I also unmounted the T5, checked its formatting (it is ExFat), but nothing gets the Nucleus to see the T5.

· It is a simple one router system using a Verizon router.

Good day @Alan_Wishnoff !

Have you checked that hierarchy of watched folders is preserved from T7 or have you tried to manually add watched folders upon connecting T5?

Also, as a test, you can try to make a backup and reset the Nucleus and run it from scratch while adding T5 as master location. Does it work ?

In case if not - can you please share a screenshot from your Storage section ?

Thanks!

Regards.

I’m afraid you’ll have to explain your suggestion like you were talking to a kindergartener. I don’t know how to check hierarchies, and I’m not even sure what you mean by “reset” the Nucleus. Turn it off and on? Hold the button in? I’ve added screen shots showing some of the songs contained in the T5 as well as the info page.

Hello @Alan_Wishnoff,

Thank you for the clarification — no worries at all, I’ll keep this very simple.

At this point, let’s do the following:

  1. Please connect the Samsung T5 back to the Nucleus and leave it connected, even if it still shows 0 albums.
Once it’s connected and powered on, just leave it as-is — we’ll attempt to pull fresh diagnostics directly from the Nucleus on our side.
  2. When the T5 is connected to the Nucleus, can you please let us know:
  • Do you feel or hear the drive powering up / spinning when it’s plugged in?
  • Does the activity light on the T5 turn on or blink?

This will help us determine whether the Nucleus is at least detecting the drive at the hardware level, or if the issue may be with the drive itself.

No need to reset anything or change folder structures for now — just reconnect the T5, leave it attached, and reply with the answers above.

Thanks for your patience, we’ll take it from here.

Thank you for your continuing assistance. I just connected the T5 to the Nucleus. I did not feel or hear the drive powering up/spinning (though I don’t experience that when I connect the T7 either). The blue light on the T5 turned on and is steady, no blinking

Hello,

Thank you for the update.

Based on what we see from the diagnostic data the externall drive is mounted properly on the system level.

/dev/sda1 on /roon/sys/storage/mounts/Samsung_T5_Samsung_Portable_SSD_T5_S4B0NV0MC09000B_744A-6B57-p1 type exfat (rw,relatime,fmask=0000,dmask=0000,allow_utime=0022,iocharset=utf8,errors=remount-ro)

Would you kindly share the screenshot from the Settings → Storage?

Hi @Alan_Wishnoff,

Thanks for this! And, if you select the +Add Folder option, do you see your attached T5 drive? You don’t have to select it, but a screenshot showing if it’s available is what we’re interested in.

Thank you!

Here it is. As you can see, the Nucleus does appear to recognize the T5.

Hey @Alan_Wishnoff,

That’s good news! Now, our follow-up question:

Since the T5 is only hosting a backup of your library, what is your goal with connecting it as a watched folder?

Thank you!

My goal is simply to confirm that my backup library on the T5 will work, i.e. be recognized by the Nucleus, should it ever be needed.

Hello @Alan_Wishnoff,

Thank you for the update.

Regarding your question:

Yes — based on what we see, the drive should be recognized and usable by the Nucleus if you need to restore from it in the future.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
