Nucleus vs iMac?

Hello everyone. I’m thinking about getting a Nucleus. I’m currently using an iMac with 16 GB of RAM and a 2TB hard drive as my server. Honestly, I’m not sure if it’s worth the switch. Has anyone been in a similar situation before? Thank you and happy 2025!

It’s not worth it. There. Saved you some money

Why are you thinking about moving the Roon server from your iMac?
If you run the server 24/7 and power consumption is a criterion, then I would rather buy a MacMini M4 in the basic configuration, add an external SSD and run the headless as a server, possibly with Plex or similar for movies.

Might be interesting to know which iMac, there’s a difference between 2006 models and 2024 models

I run a 2018 Mac mini w/ 16GB RAM and Core i5 as a Roon Server. It works great I think the iMac should be fine. What year is your iMac?

2017 model

OK. There’s quite a wide range, too (Intel Core i3/i5/i7/i9) but from a performance point of view I suppose you are fine. In this case, if there’s nothing that annoys you, it’s not worth it. The only reason would be 1) having an always-on server that you can use at any time with mobile devices, or 2) if you experienced performance issues.
