OK, I know I'm asking for trouble

…but is it just me or are the TiVo album reviews just, like, totally rubbish? I’ve read a few now, and not just for albums I like, and they’re all “well, the band/performer has done better, but this is still worth a listen”. Well, thanks mate…Jeezo.

Switch to Wikipedia, personally I find it better.

What do you want from a review? What will you use the information for?

Well…not just opinion, which in the case of the TiVo reviews, seems fairly superficial, but context, background and informed comment. To be fair, there is the option of “English Wikipedia” for many artists or albums. See, for example, how the two compare for XTC’s “Oranges and Lemons” release (which I was listening to tonight). My query is really, I suppose, do the TiVo reviews actually add any value? Interested in others’ opinions.

Steve

I love having Wikipedia as an additional option and it’s great that everyone can choose their preference, but personally quickly reverted to TiVo default. My opinion:

I think you need to accept them for what they are - by definition the opinion of the reviewer, written to entertain rather than inform. The equivalent Wikipedia article has a different objective, and following the link usually gives more information (if that’s what you’re looking for) at the expense of the Roon internal links. I’ve always tended to use both anyway, although much more likely to look at the Wikipedia entry now that I can get there without leaving Roon. It’s a quick way of finding a full discography - which can be useful because Roon can only show you what’s in your library or available in enabled streaming services. It’s worth seeing who wrote the TiVo review anyway - some authors seem more reliable than others…

Before the Wikipedia option was made available, there were numerous threads and complaints about a certain Tivo reviewer. These have all gone away now (and so has he). Choice is always good.

A lot of these reviewers are music journalists and as Frank Zappa once said, ‘Most rock journalism is people who can’t write, interviewing people who can’t talk, for people who can’t read.’.
