I have successfully gotten the roon server on my minimac to communicate with my ipad. In the roon remote app on my ipad, I was able to select my oppo 205, and at first I was able to play music, but with no album art, just words and numbers at the top and bottom of the screen. At first I had audio but no cover art, but now I don’t even have audio. The ipad remote shows something playing and the oppo 205 is selected and volume is 100 (and oppo input is USB).

Thanks for the details. What you’re describing sounds like Roon is reaching the Oppo 205, but playback is not actually making it through the USB output path.

A few things stand out here: the missing album art on the Oppo display is usually separate from the audio path, and the fact that the iPad shows playback continuing means we should focus on the endpoint connection and the Oppo’s USB input setup.

Please try these first:

  1. In Roon, stop playback, switch to a different output zone if you have one, then switch back to the Oppo 205 and start the track again.
  2. On the Oppo, confirm that the USB DAC input is selected and that the unit is awake and not in any standby or power-saving mode.
  3. Unplug the USB connection between the miniMac and the Oppo, then reconnect it firmly at both ends.
  4. If possible, try a different USB cable or a different USB port on the Oppo.
To get a clearer picture, can you tell us whether the Oppo still appears in Roon with a normal Signal Path, or if it shows any warnings or sample rate changes when you press play? Also, what exactly do you see on the Oppo display when Roon says music is playing?

Once we have that, we can narrow down whether this is a device handshake issue, an input selection issue, or something on the USB transport side.

My attempt to get images to the Oppo has made things worse again. The ipad won’t connect to the server, the ipad won’t connect to most sites, including the Qobuz app, and (thus) the Oppo is no longer found.

As suggested in another thread, it appears the issue is I have two networks, one from the Xfinity modem, and one from my eero system. I have an expert coming over tomorrow morning to help me out, and I will get back to you afterwards.

When it was working, I did switch output zones on the Oppo (to blu-ray), the oppo was awake. I will try unpluging the new cable I purchased for this, but my other cables are not long enough to reach the desktop Mac.

What I was seeing on the TV, when the Oppo was playing music via Roon, was a black background with two lines of alpha-numeric text, one at the top and one at the bottom of the screen. The top one had things like 4k; and I do recall the right bottom said something like HDMI (audio only) [something].

I’ll post tomorrow or Wednesday to update the expert fixer.

Yay, my Apple expert fixed everything. Everything is now on the eero network. I even have album art on the screen. Thank you for your help.

That is fantastic news! Dealing with double-NAT or split-network issues between a modem and a mesh system like Eero can be incredibly frustrating, so I am very glad to hear that your Apple expert was able to consolidate everything onto the Eero network.

It makes perfect sense that fixing the network routing solved both the discovery issues and the handshake required to pass that album art metadata through to your Oppo 205.
