I’ve had a look at a few similar topics but the answer seems to be ‘hey ho, yeah Roon doesn’t do that, too bad.’ I wondered if anything has changed.
I’m having difficulty overriding Roon’s assignments of compositions. Specifically in musical theatre, where sometimes all the individual songs are presented as separate works, and sometimes as multiple movements within a single work. For example, I have the 10th Anniversary recording of the Chicago 90’s cast album. For the bonus tracks on there it is identifying them all as the work ‘Chicago’. On the ‘Chicago’ movie soundtrack, however, each song is presented as its own composition. I prefer the latter method of cataloguing, but I can’t get Roon discard its recognition of the songs on the 10th Anniversary album as all being the work ‘Chicago’. Using Yate’s ‘Roon’ panel I have assigned each song its title as ‘Work’. I have ‘Prefer file’ checked for multi-part compositions in the Album preferences. But Roon is still identifying each song as the work ‘Chicago’. It’s recognising the title that I’ve given each track, but not the work. I’ve also tried removing the composer and lyricist to see if that would ‘un-identify’ the work, but that did nothing either. Any advice, or should I just give up?
I see on your screenshot that each track shows “Tags: Chicago”. This is not a Roon work identifier. This is either an embedded tag (such as ROONTRACKTAG) or a tag added by the user within Roon itself for organisational or grouping purposes. For example, I have tags such as Miles Davis Second Great Quintet (to identify all tracks across multiple albums with this line up) or Qobuz purchase (to identify the source of the album). Under Settings - General - Album Page Preferences, Show track tag links can be toggled to off, so that is no longer displayed in the album view. The tags will still show in the Tags browser.
The WORK tag has a specific use in Roon and is used in conjuction with PART (and optionally SECTION) - usually for classical music. More details are at the following (if you’ve not already read it):
Thanks for your reply Michael. The tagging is something I do independently. I’m not confusing it with the composition. What’s happening is if I click on the disc symbol with the ‘14’ next to it I’m taken to ‘Chicago’ as work, not to the song as a work, despite having the WORK metadata set to the song title for each of these songs. I can see how that would be confusing! But you can ignore the tagging, as I am!
