P1 Mini - Clarification on behavior on routing to external DAC requested

I keep gravitating back to the P1 Mini, trying to work out my particular use scenario.

Basically, I wish to primarily use Roon and TV audio while preserving the option to use an external DAC while controlling volume with the Lumin.

I think USB is the sole option to an external DAC. Is that a specialized USB Audio output? (I don’t understand the tech, but see there are many making the distinction.)

Can I route the TV audio input, whether by ARC or digital coax, to the USB output?

Can I use the LEEDH volume control for the USB output to an outboard DAC? I won’t be inputing DSD.

These aspects are confusing to me even though I’ve read through the manual and various threads. There is some conflicting info out there.

If this can work out, I would initially use the P1 Mini on its own but may want to experiment with other DACs with the Mini as a streamer.

Thanks for any clarification you can offer!

P.S. - Thank you for providing discrete input control by remote. This makes using my programmable remote much more viable than with many other units.

Hi Pete,

Hopefully my signal path shot will be helpful with regard to Audio/Dac query & what can be done.
Video & Sound I’m less sure about….will try to add more later…

Thanks PixelPopper,

That’s an encouraging start. Highest quality volume control to the USB output from streaming. Fingers crossed that the same will be true for analog, ARC, and/or digital coax inputs.

Edit: Actually, I can control TV volume from the TV itself if I use stereo analog output. So, at a minimum, just need to verify that the analog input can be output through USB. The LEEDH control would be ideal, but not absolutely necessary.

Edit #2: I notice that Roon doesn’t think much of the LEEDH control. Green isn’t any better than DSP volume. Hopefully, Roon just doesn’t know…

No. Analog and digital inputs route to analog output only. If you need a digital preamp for an external DAC, this is not the product you’re looking for.

Yes, only for network sources, Roon, internet streaming, file playback from local NAS or USB drive. Not for analog and digital inputs.

This is possible with USB output, but again this does not work for digital and analog inputs.

No.

Thank you Peter. Not what I was hoping for, but good to get the answers.

You can configure video coaxial/hdmi and use the analogue output to a pre-power amp. It’s a little bit fiddly but will work if you give it a try…
I do that for movies ….

That would require a second pre/power or integrated amp, no? And do you use a second set of speakers, swap cables, or leave both connected? Seems unworkable to me unless I’m missing something.

My power amp has both balanced & unbalanced inputs, I use the latter for video. Obviously this requires temporarily changing settings in the Lumin app but I don’t find that to inconvenient…
