Core Machine (Operating system/System info/Roon build number)

Rock on a nuc 5i3

Network Details (Including networking gear model/manufacturer and if on WiFi/Ethernet)

modem fritzbox, router dd wrt

Audio Devices (Specify what device you’re using and its connection type - USB/HDMI/etc.)

endpoint: sonore ultrarendu with USB audioquest dac

Description Of Issue

A basic question which is still not clear to me,

which is clear to me: on the core there are no audiofiles stored.

unclear to me, What is the music data pathway?

if I like a song: press play, file comes from Tidal over the internet, and next?

a) modem > router > streamer > dac > amp > speakers
b) modem > router > core > router > streamer > dac > amp > speakers

Sorry, I can’t provide a source that provides a specific answer to your question.

But I think it is safe to assume b)

The protocol used to transfer the audio data over the internet is not the same as Roon uses: Roon Advanced Audio Transport (RAAT).

So the Core must be involved in receiving the data, then sending out to endpoints using RAAT.

B.

All music is processed into PCM by the core then sent to the endpoint.

Edit, Except those using DSD as pointing out below.

Everything goes through the Roon Core…the Core talks to all the Endpoints in PCM or DSD.
