Performance and Usability Issues with Nucleus+ Since 2023 (ref#QGB2Y0)

Describe the issue

I purchased a Nucleus+ in 2022 and it's been good until this year. I've noticed a lot of instances where it's kind of sluggish when opening or refreshing playlists and other general operations glitches. It's on my wired 1 Gbps home network as is the Mac I control it from with the app. The music source is a SMB share on a Synology NAS NAS with 7,200 RPM drives in a RAID5 configuration. My collection is all .flac and is about 1.1 TB with (according to Roon) 21,891 tracks (might be some Qobuz tracks mixed in) and 1,419. Okay. So why am I have performance and usability issues? I've noticed that you guys have been pushing a lot of updates to both the Nucleus+ and the MacOS client. Anyway, I've even had to do a hard reboot on the Nucleus+ a handful of times this year. This doesn't seem like a good trend. What's going on? Please advise. Thanks.

Hi @Michael_Metts,
Thanks for writing in to let us know about this issue. Can you go to the Web Admin page for your Nucleus and share a screenshot of it with us? Also how is your nucleus connected to your router? Are you using any network switches?

Hi Daniel,

I have a eero router. Yes, there are a number of unmanaged 2.5 or 1 Gbps switches between the Nucleus and the router. Also, it did not behave like this in the first year or so. Uploading the screenshot. Thanks.

Mike

Thanks for sharing that screenshot @Michael_Metts!

We’re not seeing any obvious issues related to the Nucleus yet, but we are seeing some playback related errors in relation to audio dropouts and stoppage, for example:

Trace: [Data Conversion Systems Ltd Network Bridge @ 192.168.1.133:55089] [raatclient] GOT [977630] {"status":"Dropout","samples":48000}
Trace: [LUMIN M1 @ 192.168.1.125:41004] [raatclient] GOT [1031002] {"samples":47104,"status":"Dropout"}
Warn: [Living Room + Bedroom + Outdoor] [zoneplayer/raat] Too many dropouts (>3s dropped out in the last 30s). Killing stream
Trace: [Living Room + Bedroom + Outdoor] [zoneplayer/raat] too many dropouts. stopping stream
sendto: Network is unreachable

It seems that your network bridge may be playing a role in your bandwidth allocation within your network chain. Are you able to set your Lumin, as well as your Nucleus as a direct ethernet connection to your primary router, bypassing any network gear in between?

Let me know if you have a smoother experience in this setup. :+1:

Hi Ben,

It’s not that easy for me to rearrange my network as you describe. I’m surprised to find that there are intermittent failures like that. I’ll investigate. In the mean time, is it possible to connect a storage device directly to the Nucleus+? If so, is it possible for me to gain ssh access or define a network share so that I can sync files to it when I want to add to my collection w/o having to unplug it from the Nucleus+? Please advise. Thanks.

Mike

Yes, by USB

No, the Nucleus is not running an ssh server or anything else except Roon

Yes. You can either export a share by SMB on another machine and mount it on the Nucleus, or you can access the Nucleus‘s storage (internal or attached USB devices) by SMB as well

Hey @Michael_Metts,

@Suedkiez is spot on with their response above. Here’s more info on setting up a network share:

Let me know how testing goes! :raised_hands:
