I recently posted a technical issue ref#BNTG8Y. I have recently purchased a Nucleus and I am attempting to transfer my library from my existing server on my Mac Studio to my new nucleus. The previous technical issue was resolved after I successfully launched my Nucleus. However, the performance issue with the Roon server on my Mac, previously mentioned, is still occurring and is preventing me from performing the backup of my library to external USB. Please advise how this can be resolved.
Describe your network setup
My Mac server is connected wirelessly to a standard Vodafone broadband server. My library has 393,990 tracks.
Hi @David_Page,
Thanks for reaching out to us about this issue. The best way for us to troubleshoot this issue, is to gather some information from you and getting the logs from your Nucleus.
Is everything slow on your Nucleus or does the slowness occur when you’re doing specific things?
Is the Nucleus still analyzing the music you added? That can cause some temporary slowness until the analysis is finished.
You can send us your Nucleus logs by using the directions found here and sending over a set of logs to our File Uploader
Hi Daniel,
Just to clarify, the issue is related to my current Roon server which is located on a Mac Studio.
The server is performing for approx 1 min, then crashes with error messages displayed. This takes approx 5 min to cycle back to the server starting again. This is a constant loop and I cannot get any regular activity on the server and therefore the backup I need for transferring to my new Nucleus is not happening.
I have nothing transferred to my Nucleus yet.
I sent the logs for my Roon server as part of the previous support thread (ref BNTG8Y). I had successfully set up my new Nucleus and was trying to troubleshoot the back-up issue when that thread was closed.
I can resend the logs again if you forward the link.
Please set up a hardwire ethernet connection from your Mac to your router while we troubleshoot. Let me know if your server still has issues after that.
Do you have any saved backups?
Does this same issue occur no matter the remote device you use?
If you look at the upper right-hand corner of your Roon window (before another crash occurs) do you see a purple spinning circle? If so, can you click it? You’ll see it next to the bootmark icon, for example:
From logs, it still appears that your Mac is in the process of importing/analyzing your local library (a lot around file tags specifically) and so I’m curious if you’re seeing any of that process on the front end of things.
Where specifically are all your local files located? Do they live on the mac? Are you able to at least create a backup of your local library completely separate of Roon?
I am in the process of getting a hardwire Ethernet connection for my Mac…… will update when complete.
I do have previous backup files saved to my Mac
This same issue is mirrored on all my remote devices…when the system unfreezes, I can see my files; when it freezes, the same timeout shows on ll devices.
I clicked on the purple spinning circle. It shows a summary of automatic backups. It shows an error message showing scheduled backup failed. Two main titles are shown.
Rescanning files: 1/185483
Adding music to library: of 4096 tracks, 0 added, 0 identified.
At the bottom is a music folder detail:
Scanning now…
197088 trackers imported
222966 files scanned
My local files are stored on my Mac. As they are on my Mac, I expect I could create a backup of my local library separate of Roon. Not sure how this would work?
If this is the case, then you can also use this backup on your Nucleus to restore the same database - as long as you haven’t made significant updates or changes to your database since making the backup.
I’m guessing this is what’s causing a lot of your hangups. For some reason, Roon Server on your Mac is attempting to rescan your entire library.
Since you’re attempting to move to your Nucleus, and have a backup already, I think we can move forward with setting up your Nucleus, and stop Roon Server running on the Mac for now.
So my backups are stored on my Mac Studio hard drive…not on a USB or on a NAS.
My last successful backup was 10 Mar 2024
So I guess I should copy my backup from my Mac to an external USB and then open again on the Nucleus.
However, I cannot find a file with that date on it in my backups folder. The files in this folder are very small, 2.1MB. Not sure how these contain my full library.
Can I connect my Mac Studio directly to the Nucleus?
My assumption is that you’ll be wanting to use the Mac as a remote device to control and navigate around Roon, correct?
If this is the case, you can start with step 2 in the article I shared above. You’ll connect the Mac via a network share, and restore using your backup to your new instance of Roon Server running on the Nucleus.
Here’s another article on how to setup a network share using a Mac - the most important aspect is ensuring your Nucleus has proper access to your backup folder location within your mac. The article goes over this - but definitely let me know if you run into any questions
(This article specifically refers to setting up a folder as a watched folder, which isn’t exactly what you’re trying to do here, but the process is very much the same)
Understaood, in that case, what happens if you attempt:
\\IP_address\folder_name
Or, if there is a larger subfolder that you can test out that holds your folder_name, that would be worth a try as well:
\\IP_address\subfolder_name
I’d be sure to include the username and password as well and see if you experience the same issues. The username and password in this case would be the same credentials you use to login into your Mac.
I have already set up and formatted SSD storage on my Nucleus.
My Roon library is currently located on my Mac Studio. My problem is trying to get the library from my Mac to the Nucleus.
The Roon server has a serious glitch and it does not perform any backups, so I cannot follow the routine process for transferring my library. I have already sent through my Roon logs in previous threads
I tried file share and connected my Mac to the Nucleus but the nucleus does not recognise the Roon backups on my Mac
My question is if it is possible to load the iTunes files onto an external drive and then load them onto the nucleus SSD? Nothing else seems to work.
Are you referring to Roon Server on your Nucleus, or on your Mac? If it’s your Mac, could you please reproduce this giltch and send over a fresh set of Roon Server logs from the issue Mac? Please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader.
Thanks for sending those over @David_Page, our team will take a closer look and follow up with more information shortly.
@Neil_Carpenter I’ve removed your previous message. While I truly appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts on how the TS team handles issues, this particular feedback is more appropriate for our Feedback category. We value your input and hope you’ll share it there. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
@David_Page, after another review of the logs you’ve sent over, it seems like Roon is getting hung up on your various artist folder, eventually leading to the restart of Roon Server.
I’d be curious to see - before attempting another backup, are you able to temporarily move/disable your various artists folder from being active in Roon? After that, see if you run into the same issue backing up.
