To elaborate: I can connect to the share where my music is stored (an SSD attached by USB to my NUC) and I can read the directories and folders there. I am connected to the share as ‘Guest’ and this usually works for me. But sometimes, Including today, I get a problem when I try and copy music to this share. This manifests as a message asking me for credentials to create a new folder or to copy files across. Normally, I go through a process of reboots of my MacBook and Roon and, eventually, it seems to resolve. But not today. Any and all help gratefully received!
The screenshot you shared looks like Finder is asking for your macOS username and password, not the Guest login. How many tracks are you copying over? If it is only a handful, you can also try a drag and drop import directly into the Roon app. Let us know if this helps!
Thanks for responding. I can see in Finder on my MacBook that I’m connected to the share as ‘Guest’ so I’ve tried Guest with no password in the credentials pop up. I’ve also tried my own username and password but neither works. Also I tried copying files to an existing directory. That didn’t work either. Today, after I posted, I powered down the Roon server and connected the drive directly to my MB via USB. I was able to copy files. I then re-attached the drive and restarted ROCK. At that point, the share worked perfectly.
I’ll try the suggestion of drag and dropping from within Roon - hadn’t realised I could do that! Hope the above is some use - thanks again for your help.
One thing worth mentioning: if this starts happening regularly rather than occasionally, please tell us straight away and pull a fresh set of logs the same day. We looked at your logs today and the system log no longer covers the days when this happened, so we could not check the drive itself.
If you would like to rule the drive out properly, that is easy in your case since it is USB. Plug it into your MacBook and read its SMART health data. DriveDx is the simplest option, or smartctl if you are comfortable on the command line. Be aware that some USB enclosures do not pass SMART data through at all, in which case you will get nothing, and that is not a sign of a fault either way.
Thanks for the response - very helpful and appreciated. I’m currently away from home for a week so I’m making full use of Arc! As soon as I’m back, I’ll try your suggestion and will let you know the result.
Enjoy the trip, and good to hear ARC is earning its keep.
Since you will be away for a week and there is nothing for us to look at in the meantime, we are going to mark this one resolved rather than leave it sitting. Nothing is lost by doing that.
When you are back, please start a new thread and link to this one. Two things worth including if you have them: the SMART result from the drive, and whether the problem has returned.
Your workaround is worth remembering meanwhile. Detaching the drive, copying to it directly from the MacBook, then reattaching and restarting ROCK, put the share right immediately.
