Describe the issue

Dear Roon Support,

I’ve been experiencing persistent issues with connecting to my Roon Server, which is installed on my Mac running macOS Sequoia 15.5. This has been a recurring problem for quite some time now.

A couple of days ago, the connection was re-established and everything worked fine for a short while. However, today while listening to music, the connection suddenly dropped again. Once more, I am stuck with the app endlessly “searching for Roon Server”.

This is becoming increasingly frustrating, especially since the server and core are installed on the same Mac where I’m primarily using Roon. I would really appreciate your help in identifying and resolving the root cause of this issue.

Best regards, Olli Sundqvist

Describe your network setup

The Roon server is installed on the same Mac that I use. It is connected via Ethernet, in case that makes any difference.

Hi @Olli_Sundqvist,

Thanks for reaching out to ask us about this issue. What you’re describing is often related to firewall or security settings that may be preventing Roon from connecting properly.

When you have a moment, please check the following:

  1. Make sure that RoonServer, Roon, and RAATServer are all allowed through your firewall.
  2. On your Mac, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network. Look for RoonServer in the list and ensure that it’s toggled on. If it’s already on, try toggling it off and then back on again.
Let us know if this makes a difference or if the issue persists. We’re here to help you get everything running smoothly.
  1. is ok.
  2. is ok.

Machine is restarted. It’s now trying connect about 20 minutes. But it’s taking longer than normal.

Olli

Hi @Olli_Sundqvist, just for clarity could you confirm you toggled (off, then back on) this setting?

Few times and then I restarted the machine.

And now has tried connect over 3 hours.

Hey @Olli_Sundqvist,

Thanks for the update! If you could please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader? Once logs have been uploaded, please let us know so that we can check the server for your files, thanks!

Do you run into this issue no matter the remote device you attempt to connect from?

Hi
I have uploaded log files
Olli

And I run this issue regardless the remote device

Hello, @Olli_Sundqvist,

Thank you for uploading the files. You have added the Roon logs; please do the same for the RoonServer logs folder.

I uploaded the server files just

Hi @Olli_Sundqvist,

It’s possible that the Roon user interface started without the RoonServer component running. When you’re having trouble connecting, do you see the Roon logo in the menu bar at the top of your screen? If not, try pressing Command + Space to open Spotlight, then type “RoonServer” and press Enter to launch it.

If the logo is present, a RoonServer refresh may help. Here are the steps:

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon + RoonServer (from taskbar area)
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon Server” and “Roon”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old” and “Roon” to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

Here is the process outlined from a macOS machine:

Hi
I reinstalled ROON since nothing else seemed to help. The program actually launched—though only after more than an hour of waiting. But after that, it felt like things were finally starting to look up. I even had to restart my computer several times while trying to get ARC to work. And each time after restarting, the program managed to find the RoonServer fairly quickly.

But now the program seems to have crashed again and is searching for the server without success.

I’m starting to feel quite frustrated and tired of trying to find a solution. I just want to listen to good music—not retrain as an IT professional in retirement. I also don’t want to give up on a program that would be excellent—if only it worked. I have just under a month to regain trust in ROON. My subscription is set to renew on August 1st.

Hey @Olli_Sundqvist,

Thanks for the update, and I’m so sorry to hear you’re still running into issues!

Did you restore from a saved backup when performing the above? Or, did you have Roon re-index your local library from a fresh database?

Do you have your mac connected directly to your router via Ethernet?

We noticed you have a rather large library, almost at 400k local tracks. I’d be curious to see if you temporarily disable a portion of your library, if that will result in a smoother connection. The next time you’re able to pull up your storage settings, see if temporarily disabling half of your local library has any effect here.

Thank you @Olli_Sundqvist!
