It would be very convenient if the phone output zone list always included the current device’s zone. I have to restart the roon app many times a day to get it to appear again each time I start a new listening session.
We’ve enabled diagnostics on your account, and we’d like you to reproduce it again and send us the exact local date and time when you see the phone zone fail to appear next.
That information will help us line up the behavior with the diagnostics we’re collecting. Once you have that next occurrence, just let us know the timestamp and we’ll take it from there.
Thank you. When I open the app now at 638pm Eastern, the list does not include my phone. After restarting the app just now I see , just a few seconds before 639pm, that “Pixel 9 Pro” was added to the list.
We have to confirm a few key details to escalate this accordingly. First off, does this symptom occur identically in Roon itself as well as ARC? From your post (you mentioend Zones), we’re assuming this issue is affecting Roon.
Is the Roon app backgrounded before you connect the BT headphones and open the app? Or are you opening Roon from closed?
What about the phone itself; was it asleep, or completely powered off, before you connected the headphones?
These questions seem gratuitous, but we’re trying to pinpoint the state of Roon itself, the hardware, and the Android’s audio stack at the time that you’re physically tapping to open the app.
Lastly, do you see the audio output appropriately listed as available in other apps (phone calls, YouTube, etc.) when it doesn’t list in Roon?
If I unlock the phone and open the Roon app (not Arc), with no headphones connected, I do not see an output zone for the phone at all. Is that expected? (it would be nice to be able to play sound directly from the phone for that case).
Next, without letting the phone sleep, I connect the headphones with bluetooth. If I close and re-open the zone list in Roon I still do not see the phone as a zone. If I turn off the phone screen, unlock, and go back to the roon app (still in foreground), then open the zone list again, the phone is still missing.
Next, if I close the roon app and re-open it, then open the zone list, I see ‘Pixel 9 Pro’ appear.
Finally, if I disconnect the headphones from bluetooth, I can still play music out of the ‘Pixel 9 Pro’ zone with the Roon app, and it comes out of the phone speaker.
From what I can tell, the Roon Arc app is not affected by the issue (just plays out of the headphones if connected, otherwise plays from the phone speaker).
We’ve discussed this with our senior QA and development teams. The team is investigating some possibilities here and, as soon as that investigation is complete, we’ll be sure to follow up ASAP.
