Does the issue happen with local library music, streaming service music, or both?
· *Both streaming and local* *library* music are affected.
Do you encounter any playback errors with the "System Output" Zone?
· The System Output has the same problem as my other Zone.
Do you have a complex network setup?
· Both the device and RoonServer are connecting to a *single router*
Please try rebooting your router.
· No, I'm still having trouble
What are the make and model of the affected audio device(s) and the connection type?
· The affected audio outputs are the default Realtek audio and the USB connection on my Heavys H1H headphones. The only working output that's been tested is the headphone output on my Focusrite Scarlett Solo, connected to my computer via USB. The Scarlett is not my primary output, so I'd prefer to not have to use it.
Describe the issue
When attempting to play music, both via local files and streaming through Tidal, I get an error saying "Too many failures. Stopping playback." This only occurs with my computer. The only way I can get playback on my PC is by using my audio interface. However, I've tried multiple other audio outputs to no avail. Playback has no issues on my phone. I've tried restarting my computer, uninstalling Roon on my PC, changing options, etc.
Describe your network setup
My PC is used for both server and client, and the only other connected device is my phone.
We’ve requested logs from your affected RoonServer instance, but the machine appears to be offline. We’ll be able to precisely identify the issue once those come through.
In the meantime, the functionality of one driver-controlled endpoint (the audio interface) suggests this might be a format settings mismatch between the Roon and the Realtek driver.
Do you have any DSP profiles active on the System Output Zone in MUSE that might be upsampling?
Please share a screenshot of Signal Path and the Settings → Audio → Device Setup page (gear icon) for this System Output / Realtek Zone. Have you tried lowering the max sample rate and bit depth in Device Setup?
See if you can play content at 44.1KHz and 16-bit (FLAC files from Tidal, for example) to the System Output/Realtek Zone (System Output).
If even lower-quality content won’t play, then open the Realtek Audio Console and see if either updates are available. I might try reinstalling this driver.
I’ve just brought my computer back online, so the logs should be accessible now.
In MUSE, I currently only have sample rate conversion, crossfeed, and parametric EQ enabled. I’ve tried disabling all three, but there was no change.
There’s a second Realtek device available (I believe it’s the digital out) and it does allow playback. The signal path for this is shown in the attached screenshot, and it’s set up to be the same as the path for all other zones.
I have additionally tried using Tidal’s 320kbps option, still to no avail.
Here are the screenshots for the audio setup on the Realtek device. Out of all of the devices connected, only the Digital Out offers sample rate and bit depth conversion.
Is there any change in behavior if you try updating the Realtek drivers, or disable/uninstall them fully if not making use of them via Device Manager (Windows will reinstall default audio drivers).
I have seen some USB headsets be picky and only accept multichannel 5.1 input. In device setup for the zone, I would check to see if you have the option to send 2.0 content as multichannel.
I’ve tried disabling both the Realtek drivers and the one for my headphones, and neither had any effect.
In addition, I wasn’t able to find any option to set 2.0 content to multichannel.
I checked the article, and it cannot apply for my issue due to the fact that none of my devices have the option to change the multichannel setup - they all have the same options in the ‘Advanced Options’ menu, as shown.
The driver is not communicating this capability to Roon, which continues to feed stereo output.
When the audio hits the final stage of the digital chain in your signal path (Realtek(R) Audio), the driver chokes up.
Do you see a multichannel option for this driver listed in your Windows System Sound Settings? What about in the Realtek Audio Console or the dedicated Heavys app for the Heavys H1?
I was not able to make any change to the previous results with any modifications in the sound settings, nor the Realtek Audio Console, but upon trying some of the installed ASIO drivers on my system, I found one that works for both outputs; I’ll use that one instead.
