Playback failures when using RoPieee with Tidal on Lenovo Mini PC (ref#O2VGV6)

What best describes your playback issue?

· Music doesn't start when I press "Play"

What type of Zone is affected by this problem?

· *All of my Zones* are affected.

Does the issue affect all file formats?

· The issue affects *multiple/all* file formats.

Does the issue happen with local library music, streaming service music, or both?

· *Only streaming* music is affected.

Please select the streaming service(s) with which you're encountering playback problems.

· TIDAL

Have you tried logging out and back in again to your streaming service in Roon Settings?

· Logging out and back in had no impact, the issue remains

Do you have an approximate timestamp of when the issue last occurred?

· 13:40 30th December Portugal time

What are the make and model of the affected audio device(s) and the connection type?

· raspberry PI, running Ropieee, benchmark dac 3 HGC running the latest firmware

Describe the issue

"Too many failures stopping playback". I'm using a lenovo mini PC as my core, a RoPieee, to a benchmark DAC 3 HGC with the latest firmware. Streaming music through tidal. I've tried logging out and back into to tidal within roon to no avail.

Describe your network setup

MEO Router, NOVA mesh wifi, lenovo mini pc core, RoPiee endpoint, dac3 HGC

Is the Lenovo connected via Wi-Fi or Ethernet? If possible, use an Ethernet cable, to determine whether the problem is resolved.

The Lenovo is connected via ethernet.

Hello @James_Forman

Thank you for reaching Roon support.

I think the next step here is to enable some diagnostics on your account so our technical staff can get some more insight into what’s going on here.

However, before I enable this feature, I’d like to ask for your help ensuring we gather the right information.

First, can you please reproduce the issue once more and note the time at which the error occurs. Then respond here with that time, and I’ll make sure we review the diagnostics related to that timestamp.

Hello Vadim, Error reproduced at 12:52 (Portugal).

Hello @James_Forman

Based on the diagnostics around 12:52 (Portugal time), this is what we see:

  • Roon successfully connects to TIDAL and receives valid stream URLs.
  • Playback is initiated normally.
  • When Roon attempts to start playback, the audio output rejects the 96 kHz / 24-bit format.
  • Because the audio device reports that this format is not supported, playback stops. After several rapid retries, Roon shows “Too many failures stopping playback”.

This means the issue is not with TIDAL or login, but occurs when the audio output is asked to accept the stream format.

One important clarification:
In the logs we see Windows-based audio outputs (e.g. Realtek ASIO / WASAPI) being used at the time of the failure. We do not see a RoPieee endpoint being used for playback in this sequence.

To understand where RoPieee fits into your setup and why this format is being rejected, could you please clarify:

  1. Where is RoPieee in your audio chain?
  • Is the DAC connected to a Raspberry Pi running RoPieee?
  • Or is the DAC connected directly via USB to the Windows machine running Roon Core?
  1. Which zone are you actually using for playback when the error occurs?
  • The RoPieee zone?
  • Or a zone running directly on Windows?
  1. Does playback work at lower sample rates (e.g. 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz)?

Once we understand which device is actually handling audio output at the time of playback, we can pinpoint why 96 kHz / 24-bit is being rejected and advise on the correct configuration.

  1. The DAC is connected to a raspberry Pi running RoPiee. (Benchmark DAC3 HGC with the latest firmware)
  2. The RoPieee zone (Living Room)
  3. The same issue persists at 48kHz

Hey @James_Forman,

Thanks for the follow-up, we can still see similar errors when playback is attempted, for example:

Trace: [Benchmark DAC2 USB Audio 1.0] [raatclient] GOT [25] {"message":"RAAT__OUTPUT_PLUGIN_STATUS_FORMAT_NOT_SUPPORTED","status":"UnexpectedError"}

Since the issue still occurs when playing 44.1kHz, it could be an issue with the DAC’s USB Audio implementation, not the music format.

It looks like you’re currently using:

Benchmark DAC2 USB Audio 1.0

The DAC2 has two USB modes:

  1. USB Audio Class 1.0
    • Limited format negotiation
    • Often relies on fixed descriptors
    • Can reject formats that should be legal
    • Frequently problematic with RAAT
  2. USB Audio Class 2.0
    • Full format negotiation
    • Proper async mode
    • Fully supported by Roon / RAAT
Your logs show the device is operating as USB Audio 1.0, and the RAAT output plugin cannot establish any compatible endpoint:
failed to setup any endpoints..giving up

See if you’re able to switch the Benchmark DAC2 to USB Audio Class 2.0 and let me know if this helps! :raising_hands:

Success. Nice one Benjamin! The setting must have been changed on the DAC and I was oblivious.
