Playback issues on Synology server, music stops after starting (ref#3EA8O7)

What’s happening?

· My library isn’t working correctly (local/streaming, importing, or storage access)

Describe the issue

My Roon server is working on a Synology server, and I can see my library on my Mac but when I start playing anything i seems to begin but then stops and no music plays

Describe your network setup

Roon server on Synology connected to Mac with Ethernet cable, Octavio Amp connected to Mordaunt-Short speakers and to Mac by either Bluetooth or Airplay (neither works)

Just double-checking…you are running Roon On NAS from Synology DSM7 – RoonOnNAS ?

Thanks for making me aware of that — actually no. I installed Roon Server via Synology’s Package Center. My NAS is a 420+. It is possible that the hardware is just not up to the challenge. I do have an SSD plugged in and have just transferred the database but I am having trouble finding out how I can configure it to be used.

Hello @timo1,

Thank you for reaching out to Roon Support.

Regrettably, the hardware specifications of the Synology DS420+ fall well below our minimum requirements for running a stable and fully supported Roon Server. This model often struggles with database performance, audio analysis, and general responsiveness.

To move forward, could you please install Roon Server on supported hardware (for example: a modern Windows/macOS/Linux machine, NUC/ROCK, or Nucleus) and let us know if the issue persists?

This will help us confirm whether the behavior you’re seeing is due to hardware limitations or something else that needs further investigation.

We’ll be here to assist once you’ve had a chance to test.

The 420+ should be fine, even if not ideal. You still have to use Synology’s Package Center to install Roon on NAS. You just download it from that site I linked and perform a manual install.

Hi @timo1,

A few additional suggestions.

Diagnostics indicate that RoonServer is relying on three separate network interfaces on the NAS - to prevent device discovery issues, we recommend restricting the machine to a single interface.

Please ensure you’ve granted Roon local network access on the Mac in System Settings → Privacy & Security.

Do you see any errors in the Roon GUI when playback stops? Please share the name of a track that stopped playing for our team to pinpoint the error event in logs.

Thank you!
