Describe the issue

I have two issues that just occurred.
1. Albums that I load only play 29 seconds of each track
2. Some albums won't play, an error message appears "Too many failures, stopping playback"

Describe your network setup

Roon Roc using i7 NUC, Trinnov Amethyst, all connected via Ethernet

If I’m not mistaken, this is the playtime for “free” (not payed for with money) accounts of Tidal. So, does this happen to you for tracks from Tidal only?

OK, thanks for questioning this. I thought I was accessing the albums through Qobuz, turns out they are with Tidal, and it does appear to be the trail period, so, my bad on that one.

Thanks for the help.

Now, that just leaves the playback failures.

Hello @John_Vogt,

Glad we got the 30-second mystery solved! That is definitely the expected behavior for a Tidal Free tier or an expired trial account.

Let’s tackle the “Too many failures” error next. To make sure Roon isn’t getting tripped up by the inactive Tidal account behind the scenes, we should completely isolate your streaming environment to get a clean test.

Please try the following steps:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Services in Roon and completely log out of TIDAL.
  2. Attempt to play a few different albums specifically from Qobuz.

If you still encounter the “Too many failures, stopping playback” error after logging out of Tidal, please note the exact local time and the name of the track that failed.

Once you reply with that specific timestamp and track name, we can pull a fresh set of diagnostic logs from your NUC and see exactly where the connection is dropping.

I logged out of Tidal.

Turns out the albums that are failing are not available on Qobuz. Am I correct that this issue is also related to the Tidal account being a trial?

Thanks for your assistance.

Hello @John_Vogt,

Spot on! You are absolutely correct.

When an album is exclusively available on TIDAL and your account is on an expired trial or free tier, TIDAL’s servers actively reject Roon’s request to stream the full track. Roon quickly tries to skip to the next track in the album to keep the music going, gets rejected again, and after a few rapid-fire rejections, it stops trying and throws that exact “Too many failures, stopping playback” error.

Since both the 30-second previews and the playback failures trace directly back to the TIDAL account status, your Roon Core on the NUC and your Trinnov Amethyst are actually working perfectly!

Let us know if you decide to resubscribe to TIDAL and run into any further hiccups. Otherwise, are you comfortable with us closing out this support thread?

Thanks so much for your help!

Yes, please close out the thread.

One thing, I wish when doing a search for an album the result would show which streaming service the album is from to avoid confusion. I didn’t know that search scan both services even though I was using Qobuz.

Hello @John_Vogt

It’s marked on the album page itself.
