Describe the issue
Hi there. Hoping someone can help me. I am experiencing difficulty playback to my KEF LS60's. Roon continually freezes or stops on playback regardless if i'm using my iPhone or iPad as the controller. My roon server is running on a M4 Mac Mini (5ghz wireless) and the LS60's are plugged into the router via ethernet. Unfortunately I don't have an ethernet connection in the room where the server is located so I can't plug that directly into my router. Can anyone offer any suggestions ?

I think the next step here is to enable some diagnostics on your account so our technical staff can get some more insight into what’s going on here.
However, before I enable this feature, I’d like to ask for your help ensuring we gather the right information.
First, can you please reproduce the issue once more and note the time at which the error occurs. Then respond here with that time, and I’ll make sure we review the diagnostics related to that timestamp.
Please let us know if you’d like the team to extend your Roon trial, since you’ve lost time to troubleshooting.
We’ve sent an automatic log request to your Roon Server, but it so far hasn’t responded and uploaded the diagnostics we’ll need to proceed.
At your convenience, can you please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader. This should equip our team to pinpoint any freezes or hangs.
Does this condition occur regardless of the Roon Remote you’re using? What about the source: can you reproduce the issue with both streaming services and local library tracks?
We pulled a fresh set of diagnostics from your Mac and found your 21:21 event on 29 September.
Between 21:24 and 21:30 Roon tried five times to hand playback to the LS60, and each time the speaker was reconnecting and did not come back within the five seconds Roon waits. That is the “audio device refused to switch input to Roon” message you saw. Seven minutes earlier the same speaker was answering normally, so it is not failing outright, it is dropping and re-establishing its connection.
At the same moment your Mac also lost its own connection to our servers: 1,171 network errors on 29 September, against 2 the following day. So the local link and the internet link went together.
The connection is also slow throughout. Roon warns when the round trip to a speaker goes above 30 milliseconds. Yours reaches 606, with 481 warnings across the capture and 59 of them on 30 September alone.
Two things please:
Connect both the Mac mini and the LS60 to the router with Ethernet. If a room has no Ethernet, a powerline adapter pair or a mesh node with a wired backhaul will do the same job without new cabling.
Give the LS60 a fixed address in the router. It has been on four different addresses in the last twelve days, which causes failures of its own.
One thing we can rule out: the macOS 27 problem you may have read about is not affecting you. Your logs show the speaker answering normally thousands of times, so please ignore any advice about Terminal commands for that.
We are following up internally on your trial extension.
Thanks. I’ll try a powerline adapter. I got a warning today that my subscription was about to start and i cancelled my trial. I didnt realise it would cancel immediately.. i thought it would hold out until the 4th. Is there a way of reinstating the trial for an extension, whilst I obtain a powerline adapter to continue testing ?
Confirming that I have changed ISP’s to a faster plan over the last 48 hours, hence why you have seen my LS60 IP change. They have supplied a new router.
Thanks for both of those, and the ISP detail is useful.
On the trial: we have passed your request to the team that handles accounts. Cancelling it changes what needs to be done compared with a simple extension, so we have made sure they know that. We cannot reinstate it ourselves, but we will chase it and let you know as soon as we hear back.
On the new ISP and router: that explains the LS60 moving between addresses, so please disregard that part of our last reply as a problem in its own right. Once things have settled it is still worth giving the LS60 a fixed address on the new router, but as housekeeping rather than a fix. It probably also accounts for a good share of the network errors on 29 September, since a provider changeover lands squarely in that window.
The latency is a separate matter, and it is not explained by the ISP change. The worst day in the capture is 21 September, with 293 clock sync warnings, well before any of that. Round trips to the LS60 reach 606 milliseconds where we start warning at 30, and it runs through the whole period. That is the wireless link between the Mac mini and the router, which is the one leg in your setup carrying everything.
Before you buy anything, there is a free way to confirm it. Please run a long Ethernet cable from the router to the Mac mini temporarily, even if it means trailing it across the floor for an evening, and use Roon normally for a while. If the stalls stop, we have our answer and you can then decide how to make it permanent. If they continue on a wired link, we are looking in the wrong place and we would rather know that before you spend money.
On powerline adapters specifically: they do work for some people, but we see enough cases where they are the cause of trouble that we would not point you at one as a first choice. If a permanent cable is not possible, a mesh node with a wired backhaul to the router is usually the more dependable option.
Thanks for coming back to me with such concise information. Confirming that my new router/modem is WIFI7 compatible so wireless speeds shouldnt be a problem. But I will definitely run a long ethernet cable to isolate it. Once the trial has been reinstated I will be able to test this problem again.
Thanks for the update on the testing and the changes you made with the Mac mini and LS60. Please let us know if everything stays stable over the next few days, as we want to make sure the system is still working properly even after some time.
