Describe the issue

I upgraded to Mac OS Sequoia 15.4.1 and Roon connects plays for about five minutes and the stops. Sometimes it loops and music comes back on and then stops. I have rebooted several times and the issue continues. This is a common occurrence. About every two to three months, I have to spend hours troubleshooting Roon and growing tired of wasting my time and money on a product that appears to be unstable. I love Roon but I'd rather spend time making money than figuring out Roon's connectivity issues. Please assist; at this point, I may simply cancel, as much as I don't want to do that, this is getting old.

Describe your network setup

Ubiquiti UDM, Ubiquiti WAP's, Ubiquiti POE switches, I opened uPNP when I setup the Ubiquiti UDM since I was having issues with Roon connecting which has worked fine for months.

I just the toggle on/off, rebooted, and now Roon freezes on “Loading” which is worse than before. I’m at a loss as to what is required. Like I said, every few months I find I’m spending hours of my time repairing Roon connectivity issues, maybe Roon should be paying me, not the other way around!

I listened to music from my iPad Mini through my main stereo system (one year old Mac Mini) last night without a single Roon failure.

I got thinking that maybe it’s a cable issue with my office stereo (Nuprime Amp/Dac/Preamp - it’s the only system I could find that fits on my desk years ago) so I replaced the USB C~B cable. That did not solve the issue.

My office computer is a brand new Mac Studio, replaced a 1.5 year old MacBook Pro laptop.

Upon a reboot, same problem, Roon runs for about five minutes, then fails, sometimes music starts, sometimes the application shuts down.

This begs the question, should I delete Roon from my office computer and reinstall?

I just want to listen to my music and love Roon when it works!

Hello @David_Lillis,

Thank you for reaching out to Roon Support — we’re sorry to hear you’re experiencing restart issues.

Could you kindly clarify where exactly the problem occurs?

  • Is it on the Mac Mini where the Roon Server is installed,
  • or on the Mac Studio or MacBook Pro being used as a remote?

Additionally, have you tried manually closing Roon from the taskbar and restarting it from scratch?
Sometimes macOS can leave a snapshot of the service status in memory, and a regular reboot doesn’t always fully reset things.

Please let us know, and we’ll continue troubleshooting from there!

Thank you for your assistance. The Mac Mini is where the Roon Core is installed. When I was listening to music on Saturday, via a Mac Mini iPad/Aurender DAC/Streamer & Pre-amp/Amp, it worked fine for hours, not a single issue. In my office, where my Mac Studio sits (and last week where I was utilizing my 1.5 year old MacBook Pro-causing the same issue), Roon starts up, plays for about five minutes and then looks for the Roon Core, sometimes starts playing but always ends up crashing. My entire system, including my office, is connected via CAT 6 stemming from my Ubiquiti Ultimate Dream Machine (UDM) gateway/switch/firewall. uPNP is open on the switch (when I setup the UDM, Roon was struggling to find the Roon Core until I opened up uPNP - not ideal, it does present a slight cybersecurity risk, but since it’s closed to my network, mimimal). I have attempted to close Roon manually multiple times and rebooted the Mac Studio multiple times. Thank you again!

To add to my above comment; today, there were, I believe three updates for Roon. When I start Roon, none of the audio zones now appear, hence I cannot play music on any of my systems (office or my living room). Please advise. Thank you.

Okay, minute-to-minute updates at this point…haha! So…I rebooted the Mac Mini where the Core sits, got my audio zones back! However, the issue in my office seems to be recurring. I’ll say one thing, I’m learning new techniques to troubleshoot Roon, soon I’ll be an expert! Thank you again for all your assistance! -David

Hey @David_Lillis,

Thanks for the updates, I’m glad to hear you were able to get your audio devices back properly!

When you say crash, do you mean you have to click and re-open the Roon app on your Macbook Pro or Mac Studio?

We’re having a tough time connecting to either instances of Roon remote on your office Macs, could you please recreat the issue, share the date, time, and name of track playing when the issue occurs, and share a set of Roon remote logs from one of the issue Macs? Please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader? Once logs have been uploaded, please let us know so that we can check the server for your files, thanks!

Can you confirm Roon and Roon Server is listed as proper exceptions to the firewall in this case? Here’s more info on this:

Thank you! :raised_hands:

Crash = The Roon app shuts down and I have to click on the Roon icon to start. I followed the instruction to upload the Roon Log files but cannot locate the file; there is not a folder under any of my libraries that say, “Roon”. My firewall setting are not handled via Mac OS but rather within the Ubiquiti gateway/server/switch which is set as the following: Pop-ups blocked, Guest/Corp Wifi setup where Guest is blocked from seeing/accessing anything on my network. Countries blocked are Russia, China, North Korea and every country ending in “stan”. I have uPNP open, as stated previously, it was the only way I could get Roon to operate with the Ubiquiti. The good news, I’ve been listening to music in my office for two days now without issues. I have not tested Roon out in my living room but it was working perfectly fine. Thank you again! -David

Hello @David_Lillis,

Thank you for the update.

Just to clarify — UPnP is primarily required for using the Roon ARC application outside of your local network. Were you experiencing any issues with connectivity between your Roon Server and devices within your local network before enabling UPnP?

That’s great to hear! Please let us know if you still require any assistance or if everything is working smoothly now.

I am sorry to report, the issue is back. As of last night, my office Roon is doing the same as it has been other than for the past day or so. The app opens, starts playing music for at best five minutes, then stops playing music, loops, play, loops, plays, and then eventually completely shuts down. Thanks again for all your help.

Hello @David_Lillis,

Thank you for the update.

From the diagnostics, we can see that your Mac Mini is assigned multiple IP addresses—one from the Wi-Fi interface and another from the Ethernet interface. Roon may switch between these interfaces dynamically, which can sometimes lead to inconsistent behavior with connected devices.

To help narrow this down, could you please temporarily disable the Wi-Fi connection on the Mac Mini and observe if the issue persists? This will allow Roon to consistently use the wired connection (Ethernet) and may stabilize the communication between the Core and your endpoints.

Let us know how it goes!

THANK YOU! When I connected my Ubiquiti UDM and upgraded to the Mac Stuido, I turned off Wi-Fi since I’m now directly connected on CAT 6. I’m a dumb ass and did not do the same where the Mini is located! I will do so between tonight or tomorrow and report back. Thank you again!

-David

Hi @David_Lillis ,

Sounds like a plan, do let us know how the test goes!

I changed the settings on the Mac Mini/Roon Core where Ethernet is the first choice, Wi-Fi is second, Wi-Fi is off on both the Mac Mini/Roon Core and my office Mac Studio - all routing over Ethernet. In my office, Roon is doing the same. It opens, plays music for about five minutes, then bounces between the music playing page and, “Error loading saved page”. When that pops up on the screen in Roon, sometimes the music continues to play, sometimes, forwards to a song, tries to play, moves on to the next song…repeats. At current state, I closed Roon, reopened, and the only thing displayed on the Roon application is, “Error loading saved page” - music cannot be played. Then when I click on Home, I can, most of the time, start playing music the above repeats itself. Sometimes, the icon at the bottom of the Roon app never stops “thinking”, nothing loads, and I cannot play music. Any ideas? Thank you again for all your assistance!

Hey @David_Lillis,

Thanks for the update! Sorry to hear you’re still having issues on your Mac Studio - we’re attempting to enable diagnostic mode for the machine again, but failing to do so. Could you bring it back online, and reproduce the issue? Sharing the track name would be helpful as well, and we’ll take another closer look! :raised_hands:

Thanks for your help here, David!

Thank you for the quick response! I had to reboot the Mac Mini, for some reason when I checked on it, the Roon app was open but not connecting. Upon reboot, it’s back up. I’m attempting to play music off of my Studio now and it’s going through songs very quickly but not playing. It appears to be attempting to play but does not. The it simply stops until I hit the play button again. Once I hit play, it rolls through a few songs but does not play anything. You should be able to login my Roon now to diagnose. I will do my best to track the songs. Thank you!

I may have spoken to soon, I shut down Roon on the Studio and reopened. Current state, it’s playing Iron & Wine, Autumn Town Leaves. I forwarded to the next song, Thinking of a Place, by The War on Drugs, FF’d again, I’m an Outlaw, by Kurt Vile. At the end of the last song, Roon went into “think” mode for a few seconds where the Roon logo popped up/went away a few times and then the next song started to play, Bittersweet, Tennessee, by Kevin Morby. Then I moved to Frank Zappa, The Grand Wazoo album and started playing the record in it’s entirety. Other than that one glitch aforementioned, it appears to be working again. I’ve put in about a 14 hour day, time to source grub for dinner. I will test again in the early morning and let you know whether all is operating as expected or any issues that arise. Thank you, again!

Well, I was playing Germs Burn by Thurston Moore and it simple stopped playing mid-song. When I try to play anything else, Roon tries to play another song and does not. Music played for about 20 minutes and has stopped. When I try to play anything, it will not. I alt/Q’d Roon, started it back up and it starts playing music again (this time, Nirvana, All Apologies). As stated above, I will continue testing again in the early AM. Thank you!

Another item I noticed, when adding a song as a favorite, I pick a playlist, Roon says syncing with Tidal. Then the song disappears from the Playlist. I’m not sure if this issue is related or distinct but wanted to keep you posted of all occurrences to assist in troubleshooting. Thank you!
