Playback Stops Intermittently on Mac OS Sequoia 15.4.1 (ref#W7GRX0)

Was finishing up some emails and a window popped up, “Roon quit unexpectedly”. It appears to be very unstable, but that’s obvious.

Thank you for all the details @David_Lillis! Unstable is absolutely accurate here, let’s get to the bottom of this behavior.

First, when this playback inconsistency takes place, you’re using the same zone/ output throughout, correct?

An easy next step in testing would be, and I realize you’ve already made adjustments to your network connection - set up an even more direct ethernet connection to your primary router from your Roon Server machine. Just temporarily - see if things stabilize for you in this scenario.

Let’s also see if refreshing your Roon Server database may help:

Let’s try a fresh database and see if your issues persist:

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon + RoonServer (from taskbar area)
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon Server” and “Roon”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old” and “Roon” to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

Here is the process outlined from a macOS machine:

Hope this helps! Thanks David! :raised_hands:

Thank you for all of you assistance! The Roon Core (Mac Mini) is setup in my living room connected on CAT 6 to my Ubiquiti UDM, Aurender DAC/Streamer, GUI is provided by a Mac Mini IPad which works (well, worked fine this past weekend, I have not tested it this week, I’ve been in my office about 12 or so hours a day). My office is connected on CAT 6 through a 8-Port Ubiquiti POE ++ switch to a NuPrime DAC/Preamp/Amp (the 8-port switch is connected via CAT 6 shielded from the Ubquiti UDM to the switch and my other devices in my office, NAS’s, Win PC, Mac Studio, etc…). When I perform a bandwidth test = 984 D / 986 U from a symmetrical 1Gb fiber circuit. I believe that answers your first question. For the DB configuration, I will absolutely give that a try as soon as time permits, more than likely this weekend. Thank you again!

Forgot to add, in the Roon GUI, the living room (Aurender), when playing music, when choosing where to play music, it’s called, “Aurender”. When in my office (we’ll call that NuPrime), when playing music, I choose “Home Office”. One thing that may or may not be an issue, but I figure the more data I deliver to you for your help, the better we’ll be able to troubleshoot; In the Roon app, under, “Settings”, “Audio”, there are a bunch of selections that I did not create and not sure how they got here - “Home Office”, NuPrime IDA-8 Output", “Shure MV7”, “45WQHD240”, “CU17”, “NuPrime Office”, “Microsoft Teams Audio”, then there is “Connected to Roon Server”, which are, “Mac Mini”, “Sonos”, then, “Roon Ready”, “Aurender A1000”, “Aurender”, then, “Roon Tested”, “Living Room (Apple TV)”, “Living Room (2) (Apple TV), then, “Other network devices”, “Mac Mini”, Living Room (Arc Ultra), “Mac Studio (Mac16,9)”, “Roku Attic (3810X)”, “Wood Shop (3820X)”, “Kristen’s MacBook Pro (MacBookPro18,3)”, Roku Master BR (3810X)”, “Laptop”, “Roku Living Room (4850X)”, and Living Room (ARC ULTRA)". Since I only listen to music in my living room and office from Roon (and not out of my largest client’s Windows machine since I don’t own that computer), maybe, and just asking, should I remove all but the three I listen to Roon through (Living Room, Office, and Sonos Play 5)? Some of those items listed above such as, "“45WQHD240” is my monitor/the monitor speakers, Roku devices, Apple TV, and the Shure MV7 is my microphone for all the damn conference calls I’m all day, every day, etc…I would never play music through. And the Sonos Ultra, that’s simply my center channel connected over HDMI Arc for TV viewing only. The other Sonos device is a Play 5, and is for listening to music outside on our deck/backyard. I do stream music from Roon to that Sonos Play 5 but if it’s causing issues, that’s fine, I can remove it and play that through Tidal/Sonos app only. 99% of my music listening is in the Living Room/Aurender, and in my Office/NuPrime. I hope this helps, I’ll say one thing, I’m learning quite a bit which is always a good thing, and eventually, I am confident we will resolve the issue. Thank you again!

Hi @David_Lillis,

Thanks for the additional details!

The quality of Ethernet Over Power solutions varies quite a bit, and generally it will be less reliable than Ethernet. There are times it can work well, but if you’re having a problem and powerline ethernet is involved, we recommend temporarily replacing the ethernet over power connection with a real ethernet cable to see if things improve.

In terms of your other switches, are any of them ‘Smart’ or Managed switches?

If your switch has a “flow control” setting, please make sure that it is enabled. Also, make sure that the switch is not performing any sort of throttling that might impact communication between servers, storage, remotes, and/or audio endpoints. Finally, ensure that the switch is configured to pass multicast and broadcast traffic. If in doubt about any of this, try temporarily replacing your managed switch with a “dumb” switch to see if things improve.

This is expected behavior - Roon will autoscan all available audio devices within your network. At this time, there isn’t actually a way to delete or remove them, unfortunately - you can only ‘disable’ them once enabled. There very well may be a feature request you’d be able to upvote if this is a feature you’d like included in Roon (no doubt it would be useful for others!) I see a few pop up when I search here:
