Playing DSD from Roon through PS Audio DSD

I have noticed when I play some DSD downloads from acoustic sounds through Roon and the PS Audio DSD, the display on the latter indicates "PCM " allbeit at a higher bit rate and word length than regular CDs.

Do I have to make any adjustments to the PS Audio to accommodate DSD downloads? If not why is the display inaccurate?

When playing one of these DSD tracks can you click on the signal path icon, then take a screen snippet of it and upload the image on here.

Viewing the signal path will show what conversions if any Roon is performing to the audio signal and what it is outputting to the DAC.

Carl, thanks for your reply. What is the signal path icon?

The signal path shows that Roon is outputting to a Squeezebox and the PS Audio is not listed at all.

You’d not mentioned that there was a Squeezebox in the audio chain, and that it is very significant.

Some further questions:

  • How are all these devices connected?
  • What model of Squeezebox is it?
  • What firmware version is the Squeezebox running?
  • Is the Squeezebox EDO plugin loaded?

Have a read of Squeezebox Setup in the Roon Knowledge Base.

I’m not overly familiar with Squeezebox products, so beyond pointing you to further reading I’m not going to be able to help much further. Once you’ve answered these questions I think we will need someone with more Squeezebox experience to help.

Carl,
Thanks for your reply
It’s not a Squeezebox, it is a PS Audio Direct Stream DAC with an internal network bridge which is Roon approved.
I don’t even know what a Squeezebox is.
Now you can better appreciate my problem.
I also don’t know what EDO is.
Merry Christmas

@warren_kice
Can you confirm you have the PerfectWave Network Bridge II installed in the PS Audio Direct Stream DAC?
Also can you check that latest firmware is installed that supports RAAT.
Plus that is has been configured to enable its Roon Ready interface.

@support,
I think you need to step in here and follow up with Warren as I’ve no idea why Roon would report outputting to a Squeezebox when Warren tells me it’s a PS Audio Direct Stream DAC that is connected via the network.

I don’t think the PerfectWave Network Bridge II emulates as Squeezebox, but might be wrong.

Carl,
I owe you a big apology …the screenshot I sent you was from my secondary listening room/end point e.g. a sonic orbiter SE. I meant to take the screenshot of the PS audio in my main listing room but I got the wrong screen. Later today I will send you a screenshot of the PS audio set up and we can start over to determine if I’m getting full benefit -sound wise - from my DSD downloads.
Again I apologize for the mistake
Warren

@warren_kice ----- Thank you for the follow up and the clarification. I will be on the look out for your feedback.

Carl and Eric,
I now have lost my PS audio network device on Roon. It simply will not come up when I go to “audio” on Roon even though other devices such as my sonic orbiter and airplay do show up. The PS audio device has been playing consistantly for the last month until today.
Any help would be appreciated

Hi @warren_kice ----- Thank you for the follow up and sharing this most recent observation with us. Can you think of anything that may have happened in the last 24hours that could have had an impact on the PS audio device?

Furthermore, have you tried powering down your equipment and then powering everything back up, to see if the device can be rediscovered by Roon?

-Eric

Ive got a PS Audio DS Jr and every now and then it drops off the wire…not often tho…happened 2 times in the last couple of months…a rear switch off wait 30 secs and on again resolved it both time…USB was still working - just the bridge II stopped
