I have been a longtime promoter of having Roon improve its Playlist functionalities and have been patiently waiting for sufficient progress to be able to fix local library issues that have, over time, undergone a number of disk changes, either for insufficient local capacity appearing, or for gradual degradation of disk performance if not disk reliability.
I saw the Improver appear in 2024, and tried it, it was not working but I thought that given the probably large number of users with same root causes and same issues as mine, the youth issues of these Playlist fixtures would be quickly solved. But two years have passed…
This specific topic of matching playlist tracks to local library modifications has been part of discussions back in Summer 2024 but… as far as I can see, at least in the Mac OS world, it is still NOT WORKING.
There must be a bug somewhere.
For example, in one of my playlists, I have this playlist item for a local file : John Campbell track “One believer”, that is marked as Unavailable, and part of the targets of Improve/Match to Library on the playlist.
Yet when I ran that Match, it found nothing and the file (like all other similar cases) remained unavailable.
BUT… When I do a Roon search for John Campbell, and when I click on the Local library button, it narrows the search. Then I can directly see the album and the track in my library, with the location and path. See the circled result in the picture below.
Why would the Roon search find it easily in one case and NOT find it when the Improver/Match is activated ? I don’t see how this could be a feature, therefore it is a bug.
Regards to Roon engineers for fixing this bug, it will be of great help for many, no doubt.
It’s an unfinished feature; it mostly just doesn’t work. What a shame…
Click the cogwheel up right, select path/storage location and see if the two are similar?
These are two a priori identical references from the same file, one was on a since absent local disk, it was transferred to a new local disk. The new one was directly found as a Roon search then added manually in the playlist, I left the second one in place to identify the problem, or rather its current absence of solution with a tool:”Match to Library”’ that is in practice doing mostly nothing.
After several local disk failures and playing with backups over the years, I have now like hundreds on similar cases in 20 playlists. And I have been awaiting for a software solution that does exactly what “Match to Library” is intended to do. Same causes having same effects, I am certainly not the only one, so a fix is most welcome !

Well, you can’t get even “old file location” of file marked as unavailable…
CD
Are they grouped together or seperate? When you browse the albums like my screenshot, what do you see?
This is what I see in Roon regarding that (excellent album) that, like many others - HUNDREDS - the Improve Playlist feature cannot locate, while the rest of Roon browsing finds it easily…
It appears separated and good to go !
Well, in fact I do not understand your point, I mean I cannot relate it with the incapacity of the current code of the Playlist improver to find substitute locations (in local folders) for identical files that were previously on local folders, but along a different path.
Thanks for helping anyway, I also insist because the solution seems almost already written, just that the right search code is not yet implemented (or implemented correctly) in the Playlist Improver option.
Best regards,
