Playlist Operations and their Behaviour

I’ve been discussing Playlist operations (that seem to be causing some confusion) with another community member, and I thought it might be useful to post some of the findings here. They are:

  1. Adding multiple tracks in a playlist to the Library
  2. Adding Tags to multiple tracks in a playlist.

In case 1, If you select multiple tracks in a playlist, if any of those tracks are already in your library, then the “Add to playlist” for that multiple track selection will be greyed out - because at least one of the tracks is already in your library. The “Add to library” option is only enabled when all of the selected tracks are not in your library.

It could, I think, be argued that the “Add to library” option be enabled in a mix of non-library and library tracks since there would be items in the selection that have not yet been added to the library. That’s a UI design change, and if anyone thinks it important, they could document this use case and post in Feedback > Feature Suggestions - and it would bring the behaviour in line with case 2.

For case 2, if you have at least one track in a multiple track selection that is in your library, then while the “Add to library” option is disabled, the “Add to Tag” menu option is enabled. Going by posts in the forum, it is sometimes thought that by performing this operation on the selected tracks, the Tag will be added to all the tracks in the selection. However, the Tag will only be added to the tracks already in the library; non-library tracks cannot have Tags added to them.

I find it somewhat confusing that with a mix of library and non-library tracks in a selection, the “Add to library” option is disabled while the “Add to Tag” option is enabled and vice versa - I would have thought that it would be less confusing if they were both in the same states.
