Many thanks Alan. No apologies are necessary. Sorry for my delayed response. In the past I’ve observed subscribers in these forums who for various reasons found themselves in a similar circumstance such as the one you find yourself in but they were less than kind to this community’s volunteers and or Roon Support team members when they were offered an opportunity to step back and or to reset the dialogue.
Sometimes we all need to step away and take a deep breath then return to the table once again. You my friend are a class act.
I suggest relocating your backup directory and or waiting for Roon Support to confirm with assurance a response will be forthcoming but everything seems to add up at this point. You did some great analysis on your own as well, your tech skills are not to shabby in the least.
Edit: I see @Jim_F has responded. I would suggest following his instructions and I think they will see you and your system safely home. All the best!
Might you be able to give me some advice on how to do this? I have tried backing up to Dropbox, but progress was incredibly slow, and then the backup failed because it said that the disk was full, despite me having no files saved in it, and supposedly 2GB of storage space available. The Roon backup files surely wouldn’t take up that much space, would they?
Many thanks for the prompt reply, it is indeed a Mac desktop.
Please don’t rush though, as I have to go out soon and wouldn’t be able to carry out your instructions until later, by which time I’ll have had more beers than recommended with some old friends and would not attempt any IT-related activity in that state. Your assistance is very much appreciated though, and I look forward to exploring this option. I have decent broadband speeds, but Dropbox seems to be as slow as a week in the jail.
If for any reason you have the need to remove a user remember to add them back if file sharing is required. Understand the concept of permissions and access or you’re going to give yourself a headache. If your a Rookie don’t touch anything in the “User” section other than providing yourself with “Read & Write” permissions for the appropriate directory/folder that you wish to share as well as providing a password in the “options” section if needed.
In my demonstration Moonrocks is the directory on my computer which I wish to share. It was added here by using the + symbol in the shared folder window.
Last thing. I once read in the threads where someone claimed that they regularly kept backups in their safety deposit box at first I thought that was overkill and then I quickly realized that it was not at all and I too needed to make some changes.
Roon’s backup system is extremely robust and users can have the software run endless daily automated backups via various means from sun up to sun down and the software gives us clear warnings. Roon Labs rightfully will nott take responsibility for our losses when as users frequently don’t head those warnings and they won’t comment but we all know what they’re thinking…
“You were warned.”
I’m bringing this up because like you I used to use two backups but I had an extraordinary issue where both of my backups were corrupt and failed. I currently run 6 automated backups to multiple computers, media as well as Dropbox to play it on the safe side. My backups and my time are far too valuable.
I’m afraid I don’t have a Nucleus for testing but that should matter little. If there’s a caveat that I’ve missed Roon Support or the community will address it. Happy to help.
Also I neglected to mention that the knowledgebase has a short sweet version of the instructions above. These images were holdovers from another assistance project that I worked on here at Roon.
I attached an old 1TB HDD to my Nucleus for Roon database backups. You simply go to Roon - Settings - Backups and set up one or more automated backup routines. Simple.
Could I just check, currently the Roon database is being backed up to the two SSDs connected to the Nucleus server. This is downstairs, and the Mac is upstairs, so given that the Nucleus is in a separate location, how do I get the relevant information, ie the database info, to be shared from the Nucleus to the Mac? Sorry if I’ve missed something.
Hi @Alan_Meldrum,
We had our devs take a look at your case. They wanted to know whether these are playlists that you created in Roon or playlists that you imported to Roon. Also they asked for you to upload one of your backups for us to test. You can use this link.
These are playlists that I created in Roon, as I mentioned in my first post, copied below.
I noticed that a number of playlists I had created in Roon were either empty, or only had a handful of tracks left in them, despite there being tens or sometimes hundreds of tracks in them before this fresh import was initiated. A screenshot of these playlists can be seen in my initial post.
The Roon playlists that were emptied contained tracks from my local library that are not available to stream on Qobuz, and it took me a considerable amount of time to curate these, so I am obviously distraught that they have ended up empty or nearly empty.
I will attempt to upload one of the backups for you to test.
I realise that you have just had a public holiday in America, but it has been precisely three weeks since I raised this issue, and public holiday or not, this is shockingly bad customer service from Roon. Not even an apology for your tardiness. Absolute joke.
I’ve uploaded ten files that were contained in what I think is the most recent backup folder. You have not given me any specific guidance, so I can only hope that what I have sent you is what you are looking for.
The amount of time that it took for you to tell me what you should have told me in the first place gives me an insight in to how you operate. I suppose I should be grateful that I got an apology this time.
File is 23 GB big and is uploading now. If you do not receive a further message from me you can presume that the file uploaded without issue.
