Please reinstate the cover art overlay info for tagged items

Hello Roon, well, this has left me very frustrated.

Please can you reinstate the cover art overlay information (format/version etc) for tagged items or expand the description, which appears below, beyond simply title & artist please.

I predominantly listen to my own collection of music, ripped and downloaded over many many years of listening. As such I like to tag my albums to categories that match the file system sytem I store them in e.g. Rock, Blues, Reggae, Jazz etc I don’t search/filter using the pre-defined Roon categories as I’m not a streaming service subscriber.

Well, now that you’ve removed the overlay information I can no longer differentiate between tagged versions of the same album of which I have many. Here’s an example under my ‘Rock’ tag:

Any idea which version of L.A. Woman is which? Me neither unless I click on one of them to view it, but that’s an extra click that I don’t want and not how a library should work.

So in summary, please bring back the option to overlay info e.g. format, version and sonic range for tagged items or give me the ability to add this to the description below the cover art. If I can make this change through settings then I apologise but I don’t believe I can.

Sadly it just feels that everything you have done Roon in your 1.8 reboot is geared towards streaming service subscribers.

Oh, and reducing the size of the waveform bar to the extent you have is an absolute joke.

Thanks in advance, Simon

Why believe? Go and take a look.
Settings | General --> "Customize album display"

Under settings… general… customize album display are toggles for the overlays including format, version, and dynamic range if that is what you are looking for. They do show up kind of under the cover - the ones you are asking about - when toggled on so that’s a bit different than 1.7. But it is there.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys but those settings don’t apply to custom ‘tagged’ albums only ‘Albums’ in the My Library section or after searching for a specific artist…

Albums under my custom ‘Rock’ tag:

Try it and see what I mean. If you have two versions of one album, create your own tag and add them to it. When you view that tag you’re left with a minimal Title/Artist description so are unable to differentiate between the two.

@dylan do you have a comment about this?

Yes the settings are primarily for the album browser and related views.

Why should you do that, if you can open the Tag from the album browser (hint: focus) where you can see what you’re interested in?

PS: It may never work in tags browser as tags can contain any primary object (Artist, Album, Track, …) - even mixed.

I suspect we all use Roon slightly differently. A feature I use that was available in previous releases has been removed from 1.8, whether by design or error. Please can Roon comment. Thanks

Has there been any discussion from the Roon team on this? I was assuming this was a mistake that would be corrected but 1.8 has been out for a while and nothing is better. I use the VERSION tag to differentiate albums. It was overlayed on top the album for every version up to 1.8 and now it’s not there. I would really like it if this was back, atleast as an option. It’s a big problem for the way I use Roon.
Any info is appreciated.

@Simon_McEntyre and @Mike_Falcon – I also missed this when 1.8 came out, but I believe some of the updates since have introduced settings to enable this. For example, I have a custom tag “RockAltPop” and a bookmark to the albums in that tag, and I now do see the details, as follows:

Would that give what you want? – sorry if I’m misunderstanding what you mean –

Here’s the settings @otinkyad is referencing, keep in mind some of these settings need to be setup on each remote device (just in case you want different info on different devices):

@Bryan_Nieman – providing the settings is probably more helpful than my post was – thanks!

[Good taste with the Oasis 5.1  – I recently purchased that SACD myself]

Hi @otinkyad thanks for replying - this feature ‘extended metadata added to tagged albums’ was restored in 1.8 (build 764)

Hi everyone, thanks for replying. I see what everyone is talking about. It’s different now, than 1.7 because the Version tag is no longer overlayed on top the album. It’s there though so it’s just a new thing I need to get use to I guess. I think I prefer it over the album but in 3 months I will have changed my mind.
Thanks

My vote is the new placement as it technically gives the version information more room (and as you can see in my screenshot, I include a lot of info) and I also like how the cover art doesn’t get marred.

In my local library I’ve been tagging my DVD-A and SACD rips for many years with version information in the album title (for example “Remain In Light (24/96/5.1)” as this was the only sure fire way to get apps I was using to see different versions of the same album as distinct versions as opposed to folding my CD version, the stereo DVD-A version, and the 5.1 DVD-A version into the same album (playing track #1 three times, track #2 three times, and so on.) Now that I use Roon, my information in the album title is creating a different kind of issue which is the album versions are treated as separate albums as opposed to correctly being identified as multiple version of the same album.

In this specific case of Talking Heads - Remain In Light, I can’t even find my DVD-A stereo version of the album when searching for the album with Roon Search, even though two tracks from that version come up in the “Tracks” results section (where I can then tap on the album name to get to the DVD-A stereo version).

I’m pretty sure if I remove my added information from the “Album” tag, Roon will fold everything together correctly but I need to do some testing before I go updating metadata across my whole collection.

Furthermore, I’ve also observed Roon likes to pick my 5.1 mixes as the “Top result” which is not ideal for me as only one of my audio zones is a 5.1 setup and I prefer to listen to the native stereo mixes in all my other zones as opposed to folding down the 5.1 to stereo.

Anyways, like you, the album information being easily visible is very important to me!
