Would you recommend Roon to a non-technical person?

Depends how non-technical. (There are some non-technical persons to whom I wouldnât recommend any OS or app on desktop or mobile, so I canât answer such a general question)
My mum? Never. My son, maybe (but heâs into Spotify
).
I did answer Yes. If the network is ok and the hardware specs are ok.
In those conditions, I would install roon for my mum that doesnât know how to use âShiftâ key and still uses âcaps Lockâ key for the first letter of a sentence.
The beauty of roon (for me) is that you can use it with so much customisations, and there technical background is necessary.
I answered ânoâ but I realize that this whole western world is not easy to understand for non-technical persons. Even my father who was a financial manager years ago and a friend of mine who is a tax lawyer/expert are angry at the tax-department for bothering them with the modern security tools. Without apps and smartphones and knowledge you canât get anywhere here in the Netherlands.
I have a technical background and that helps. I donât know much about software and Windows/Linux but I have some insight. Just restarting everything and never give up helps a lot.
But if a radio or record player would have behaved like misic software does now in terms of reliability, people would have thrown it out of the window to buy a better one. In other words we are used to non-working devices and security problems and are willing to pay experts to help us getting everything in working condition again. It is a business model that there is no software that would work for ever, also due to systems like Windows where it runs on that need to be updated constantly.
For setting it up, no, I wouldnât recommend it. Especially if they have a library of ripped and downloaded files already.
But for usage, I can hand anyone in the house a remote, and theyâre up and using Roon with minimal prompting. Pick your destination, search for music, and youâre off and running.
If there were a paid service out there, or even just some generous volunteer audiophiles, who could help others set up Roon for them, it could overcome a major hurdle.
My wife uses Roon and Spotify very happily. She was a ballet dancer, thatâs very technical.
