Describe the issue

Playlists and library deleted after latest update

Describe your network setup

Asus XT8

Updates are completely screwy on Macs. I’m using a Mac mini (M2) running Sequoia as my Roon Server. After the update, Roon couldn’t find any end points. I tried re-starting the server, re-booting my router, switching Roon network access off/on under privacy in sys prefs.

Then after about a day, it suddenly found all my end points, even though I had taken no intervening actions during the interim. I was glad to finally be back in action.

Then about a couple of hours later, Roon decided to completely delete ALL my playlists! It also decided I no longer had a library, so I had to rebuild it from scratch. Needless to say, I lost all the previous playback data, in addition to my playlists.

At this point, I’m pretty much done with Roon Update. I apologize for this long rant, but I’m really upset by how hard it is to update Roon on a Mac.

While this shouldn’t happen, and I have no idea what’s wrong, I’d advise to always have a current Roon database backup, then you wouldn’t have to rebuild the library from scratch but just restore the backup.

Thanks for the response! I was able to recover from a backup. Now all my end points have disappeared AGAIN!

I hoping someone from Roon can help me understand why updates on Mac-based systems are so problematic. I’ve had issues with every update for months now.

Hello @Rob_Welles,

Thank you for reaching Roon support.

We are gone ahead and enabled the diagnostic on your account. From the RAAT server logs we see a lot of discovery errors which can tell us that something is preventing the access.

04/19 14:36:01 Error: [discovery] error sending response: host is unreachable

Let’s try to start from the simple steps.

1. Open Activity Monitor

  • Press Command (⌘) + Space to open Spotlight Search.
  • Type Activity Monitor and press Enter.

2. Find Roon-Related Processes

  • In the Activity Monitor search bar (top right), type Roon.
  • Look for the following processes:
    • Roon
    • RAATServer
    • RoonAppliance

3. Force Quit the Processes

  • Select each Roon-related process.
  • Click the (X) button in the top-left corner of Activity Monitor.
  • Choose Force Quit.

4. Restart Roon

  • Open the Roon app again from your Applications folder or Dock.

Please navigate to macOS System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network , and make sure Roon is allowed. If it is already enabled, toggle it off and on again. Then reboot your Mac, and see if the same issue persists.

I’ve completed the steps you outlined. Now my end points have all disappeared, again!!

Hey @Rob_Welles,

Thanks for the update! It’s difficult to know if @vadim’s above steps helped at all based on your response - were you able to gain control of your audio devices at all before they disappeared?

I see you’re running Sequoia version 15.3 or so, with the latest version being 15.4, which Apple has fixed many issues in relation to their CoreAudio and discovery protocols - I’d be curious to see if updating to Sequoia 15.4 may help you in a more long-term sense.

Is this something you’d be able to try? If so, let me know if you’re able to see your audio devices properly after restarting your Mac post-update.

Thank you!

Hey Benjamin,

I was already on 15.4 when I updated Roon. I’m currently on 15.4.1. When I got up this morning, the Server couldn’t find any of my network devices. About 2 hours later, the devices were found. I made absolutely no changes whatsoever during those 2 hours, no restarts, no nothing. Are you able to see anything from your end?

thanks,
rob

Hey @Rob_Welles,

Ah, thanks for the clarity! Our records indicate your M4 Mac running Roon remote is on 15.4, but the mini running Roon server is still on 13.4.

I’m glad to hear your devices were discoverable nonetheless! There’s nothing obvious on our end that we’re seeing but we did request a fresh diagnostic report from your M4 running Roon remote, if you’d like to bring it online we’ll take a closer look just in case. :+1:

Maybe there was a typo; it was running 15.3.1. I’m in the process of updating it to 15.4.1 right now. Hoping you’re right!!

thanks,
rob

I’ve finished updating to 15.4.1. My end points have disappeared again. I’ve rebooted both the server and my router.

Curiously, only Roon shows up under Sys Settings>Privacy>Local Network. Roon Server is not showing up now (it was before).

[End points just showed up! Just a little late for the party. :upside_down_face:]

Hello @Rob_Welles,

Thank you for the update we are glad to hear that the audio devices is avaliable again!

Would you kindly clarify do you still have the issue with the library?

Unfortunately, I didn’t have backups properly set up. I was able to find a backup from a few months ago, so I could recover most of my playlists. I simply rebuilt my library of local files by reimporting.

Should I be concerned that Roon Server is no longer showing up?

Hi @Rob_Welles ,

Can you please clarify what you mean by Roon Server is not showing up? Is this only happening on one Roon Remote or multiple? What exactly are you seeing, can you share a screenshot?

I’m referring to System Settings>Privacy & Security>Local Network. Here’s a screenshot.

Hey @Rob_Welles,

A fair question!

Is this on the Mac running both Roon and Roon Server? Or, is it the Mac you’re only using for Roon - with Roon Server living on the other machine?

If you aren’t running Roon Server on the machine you’ve shared the screenshot of, you have nothing to worry about. :slightly_smiling_face:

Outside of this, it sounds like you’re back up and running properly - thats great news! Now you can finally get back to the music! :notes: :drum:

This IS my Roon Server! Everything seems to be working okay now (music plays fine), but this concerns me.

Hi @Rob_Welles,

Got it, thanks! We’ll check in with our development team and see if there’s any extra info we can share with you.

The good news is that I installed the latest Roon update with only minimum issues: a couple of Server restarts and router restart. The bad news is that Roon Server is still not showing up in Sys Settings>Privacy & Security>Local Network. Otherwise, it seems to be running fine.

Hi @Rob_Welles,
I’m glad the update went well and everything seems to be working except for RoonServer not showing up in Local Network. Like @benjamin said we will need to check in with our developers to see if this is indicative of a problem. Just to make sure are you able to connect remote devices to your RoonServer right now?
