I would like to report an issue that occurred after the most recent Roon Core update. The update caused the application to stop functioning on my QNAP TS‑264. The only way to restore functionality was to revert to the previous version.
However, I am aware that this is not a long‑term solution. The inability to update means:
no access to new features, improvements, and bug fixes,
uncertainty about the future stability of the system,
a real risk that I may not be able to continue using Roon on my current hardware,
the need to consider unplanned expenses for new equipment, even though my existing setup had been working correctly.
Additionally, I believe that such significant changes in compatibility should be communicated to users directly and clearly, rather than solely through community forums. This would help users make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary issues.
I kindly request information on whether there are plans to address the compatibility problems affecting Roon Core on QNAP devices, and what the long‑term support outlook is for this platform. I would like to understand whether I can expect stable operation of Roon going forward, and whether the current situation is temporary.
The communication wasn’t great, but you can switch to the new supported solution using a Docker container, which was created by Roon Labs for this purpose. Roon will run in this container together with all software it needs, so it is isolated from the underlying QNAP OS (and its outdated system libraries, which caused this mess). This should be future-proof.
You can find instructions here in this thread (and many others that you will find if you search for TS-264 on the forum):
Ask here if you need help. It may look a bit daunting at first but is totally doable.
The native Roon Server application for QNAP has recently been deprecated due to updated system requirements, which is why it will no longer start. To get your Roon Server back online, you will need to migrate your setup to our official Docker container using QNAP’s Container Station.
Please perform the following steps to safely transition your core and restore your service:
Disable the Old App: First, open your QNAP App Center and completely Stop or Disable the old Roon Server application. This is crucial to prevent network conflicts with the new setup.
Install Container Station: Ensure you have the “Container Station” app downloaded and installed from the QNAP App Center.
Select the New Server: Once the Docker container is successfully running, open your Roon Remote app. On the startup screen, click the Select a different Roon Server button.
Authorize: Choose the new server instance from the list and log in. Because the Docker container acts as a new machine, Roon will prompt you to Deauthorize your previous QNAP core to transfer your license to the new setup.
Restore: Once logged in, you can restore your database and playlists from a recent Roon backup.
Please let us know how the migration goes or if you run into any questions along the way!
