Description of Issue

was curious. I am running roon core on my pc which is an intel i7 and using a lumin streamer as an endpoint. Will there be any benefit building an intel nuc with rock instead ? Looking at it from an audio quality purpose(sq). Thanks.

Roon Server Platform

Windows

Roon Server Specifications

intel i7 pc, with 32gb of ram . 2 year old computer

Connected Audio Devices

lumin u2 mini

Home Network Details

1 gig ethernet

None whatsoever, unless your current PC is in your listening room and has a loud fan.

If you do use it for other desktop purposes though, having Roon on a dedicated server (or at least a server) would be more convenient and reliable.

OS would not affect sound quality though.

There is no SQ difference between which OS runs Roonserver. Even Roon themselves say this.

I had nothing but problems when I moved roon over to a NUC with ROCK OS. Every couple of days my remotes could not find my core. I had to reboot the NUC with ROCK. I even had issues sometimes while playing music, the music would stop and remotes would lose sight of the core, I had to reboot the NUC. I finally moved my core back to my HQ Player PC and problems vanished. Very stable. No more ROCK for me.

This is a very unusual experience though, and probably something specific in your setup

Sorry to hear your experience with a NUC. Mine was the exact opposite. I had been running Roon on an i7 Windows desktop PC which would periodically have dropouts (all was wired via ethernet - no wifi except for using my iPhone to control). When I switched to a NUC 8i7 running ROCK (also hardwired) and sitting right next to my router, all problems disappeared. Better yet, the NUC has required absolutely no maintenance.

I used to use a Mac fired my room server and moved to an i7 NUC. Like @mdconnelly, it was much more reliable. In the last three years, I’ve needed to spend exactly zero minutes on maintenance or problems.

With the Mac, I always had to worry about what the next OS update will bring.

Sorry about @Quadman’s experience.
