Pre-Buy Roon/Nucleus Questions

System: AudioControl XR-3, 5.1 speaker config, Apple TV into XR-3 via HDMI, planned Nucleus with 4TB SDD into XR-3 with HDMI. The Nucleus will be the core. I’ll plan to have my CD collection put onto the Nucleus and I’ll integrate TIDAL as well. UltraHD TV via HDMI out of the XR-3 as well.

Q1: If I have a hard disk drive connected to the Nucleus by USB can ROON transfer the files to the SSD or do I have to handle that with another computer on the network? I understand that if using a laptop to coordinate the transfer, that it can take an exceptionally long time to execute the transfer if going over wifi.

Q2: At this point I do NOT have a hard wired ethernet connection at the endpoint (XR-3) and I have read that hardwire ethernet connections are preferred. I do have a Linksys MX10600 Velop Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Router whole home system with the primary node only about 25 feet away from the endpoint and the pathway is mostly unobstructed (from loft to first floor). A secondary wifi node is next to the endpoint and it has an ethernet jack that I can plug into. Drilling holes and tacking ethernet cable to our walls will not be encouraged by my wife.

If the wifi system can’t handle the load, what are the thoughts on the MoCa (multimedia over coax alliance) technology for placing an ethernet port near the endpoint? This house was built around 15 years ago there are multiple cable tv coax connections. ScreenBeam offers a product that may work.

Thank you in advance!

MoCA is perfect, one of my Roon setups is all MoCA for exactly the same reasons, from main router to server to endpoints. I Use (an earlier model) of these.

One home networking tidbit I learned from a pro recently: phone wiring in US homes built mid-2000s is sometimes done with Cat 5. It you have RJ-11 jacks on the walls, it might be worth checking if what’s behind is Cat 5, in which case re-terminating with RJ-45 might be all you need.
