Primary artist credit replaced by same name artist in Roon (ref#RYK0XH)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· Primary artist credit replaced by equivalent/same name artist

I know Roon has longstanding issues with mixing up artists with the same name but I keep getting hit with it in a specific way, which is that the primary artist credit on a release is replaced with the incorrect but same named artist.
This seems to happen anytime there is a same named artist.
All other credits use the correct artist, only the primary artist credit is replaced.

Here’s an example.
At some point a duplicate The Beatles artist has appeared (no idea where it has come from), and it has replaced the actual The Beatles as primary artist on all their releases.

I’m constantly having to fix this issue by editing credits and removing the incorrect artist, but the fact it’s now happening to one of the most popular artists in history is pretty ridiculous.

What does “replaced” mean? Is the correct artist used at first while the album is already in the library and then replaced later? Or is the wrong artist applied at the point when you add the album to the library?

Primarily when adding a new release I’ll see that the wrong/duplicate has been added.

But in the case of The Beatles this duplicate has been added to already imported releases - I listen to them a lot and it was definitely correct in the past (somebody else spotted it as well - Mixed up "the beatles")

Hmm, I see. This is strange because if I search for Beatles and then filter the resulting artists for The Beatles, I only get one of them:

Perhaps this case from April was fixed. Anyway, I have a bunch of Beatles album and the correct artist was not replaced. Not sure what’s going on there for you, but the case from April has a band photo and formed/disbanded dates, but your example has no photo, so it might not be the same thing.

Obviously there is something wrong, anyway, if such an artist suddenly gets applied to in-library albums without any intervention. Something for support to investigate.

This might be a different issue, not sure. It is known to happen when adding an album to the library and the correct artist is not yet in the library (i.e., there is no album in the library where the correct artist is already added). This usually happens with local files. In this case, a duplicate artist is (sometimes?) created and used.

This duplicate never has any additional information (formed/disbanded dates, bio, image etc. Nothing at all but the name). So it cannot explain the Beatles “formed in Philadelphia” case from April but perhaps yours.

When I search for The Beatles, there is no duplicate found. Therefore, I suspect that this duplicate may have been created for you locally in the past when you performed such an import.

The easiest way to avoid this in the first place is to first add an album with the correct artist from a streaming service, before performing the import of the new local album. Then the local album should pick it up correctly upon import. This is indeed very annoying because it’s necessary to do this for all credited artists on the to-be-imported album. (After the import, one can remove these albums again from the library if there is no other reason to keep them).

If it already happened, it’s of course possible (but also annoying) to edit the imported album and remove the wrong artist. If there are too many albums and it is too much work, you can merge the wrong artist into the correct one: Select both artists, then click the Merge button that should appear top-right.

It happens with artists that already exist in the library. Today I added an album by the UK band Free (I already have other albums by them), and it has a different Free as the primary artist. It is an actual person/artist, not an empty duplicate

I know the workarounds but I want Roon to respond and actually try and fix the problem

OK that seems wrong and a topic for support :+1:
This whole issue with poor duplicate handling in so many different ways is soooo annoying

As far as I can say:

whenever (=always) there exist in roon-db 2 or more artists with the same name (e.g The Beatles), and the track files are tagged somewhere with “The Beatles”, Roon does not associates the tag to the correct artist (id est the artist already present in roon metadata for that album), but to one of the others.

this does not happens only in first import of an album in the library, but can happen in any library database periodic update. so, for example, my beatles albums are there unchanched (same file tags) but at some point in roon metadata has appeared a second “The Beatles” artist… and it propagated in my (our) local db.

Since this is a really old problem (i would call it a BUG) I’ve not made experiments recently. But if i’m not wrong this happens when:
-an artist is credited in the PERSONNEL tag (present in most of my files…)
-or if the artist is credited in the ARTIST tag
-it does not happen with the ALBUM ARTIST or ALBUMARTIST tags

about this: the Roon KB file tags best practices are not so clear, as they don’t really explain if there is any difference in its use of these tags (ARTIST and ALBUMARTIST).
since the beginning of my using Roon, and experimenting with tags, i now use this simple rule:
-in ALBUM ARTIST i put all the artists that should have a link in album artist displayed in roon, separated by a / (which is also commonly used by roon for multiple album artists)
-in ARTIST i put other artists i would like to be present as primary artists.
so for example, for John & Yoko albums i have both “John & Yoko” in ALBUM ARTIST and “John Lennon” “Yoko Ono” in ARTIST

in some cases, when mixed up artists appear, removing the ARTIST tag helps.
but in my case, the PERSONNEL tag (if present) mixes up.

in my opinion: roon should simply have a rule like “file has this tag and it’s literaly the same as my metadata here, so i match them!”
and this would solve 80% of the problems

but the rule would not work if roon does not have rich metadata for an album (in general track personnel are very poor, expecially in non mainstream/UK/US music) and find some file tags that it doesn’t know how to match.
in most cases, if the artist is already in local library, and there are no other artists with same name, the match works. but there are also errors.
in this case, it would be useful a shortcut to correct a match.
Now you have:
-locate and select the tracks with the wrong artist
-edit the tracks removing he credit.
-then add a new credit with the correct artist, selecting the role (=impossible in cas e of many roles/instruments)

the shortcut should do this:
-in album edit, button REPLACE MATCH, then you select a credited artist and have the choice to replace it with any other artist (at least present in local library)
-the replacement should take place in ALL credits, at album level, track level, composition level

To clarify, I don’t have personnel tags for these releases (I only use those to add featured artists)

Example track tags:

Hi @Henry_Buckle, @Niccolo_Terzi,

Please allow us a chance to investigate logs and relevant upstream data and we’ll respond with more information. This will require a little bit of untangling, but what you’re seeing is (obviously) not expected.

Thank you for your patience. We’ll respond with more information shortly.

Hi @connor
I agree that this should not be expected. But I think it’s a known fact.
At least, I’ve read (and written) various discussions on this problem. I cannot look now …

In any case, I confirm that this is a well estabilished behavior, present since i use roon. Systematic and reproducible.

I can add an info. Let’s say I add “The Beatles” in the ARTIST file tag of an album which has nothing to to with The Beatles. in this case in the album credits i find “The Beatles” and it’s not the Liverpool band… but the other. How does roon make a choice??

if i add “The Beatles” to the ALBUM ARTIST tag, roon ignores it and “The Beatles” do not appear. note that in my library import setting i have “Album artist - prefer roon”

Some more examples of primary artist replacement, leading to the stupid “All tracks performed by”

Hello @Henry_Buckle

Thank you for the extra examples and screenshots. To find out why the wrong same-name artist is being applied, we need to look at your library database. Your examples (The Beatles, Free, X, Example, Alex G, and Infernal) will be our starting point, so there is nothing else you need to prepare.

Here is how you can help:

  1. Please create a fresh backup in Roon (Settings > Backups) so it includes the current state of your library.
  2. Please zip up your RoonBackups folder.
  3. Please submit the .zip file to us through our Database portal.

Once we have it, we will take a look and follow up here.
