Problem connecting kitsune red to a non-roon-ready dac

hi folks

i’ve been successful at connecting my kitsune red to a roon-ready dac.

i’ve been less than successful connecting it to a dac which is NOT roon-ready.

my current setup is as follows:

red → bifrost2 dac via USB (success streaming roon)

red → prism orpheus preamp/dac via toslink OR digital coax – NOT SUCCESSFUL

input to the red is via ethernet from the roon server.

i notice that when the bifrost dac is switched off i see the red appear in the roon audio devices list, but when it is on i see TWO red devices in the list. i’ve been assuming that with the bifrost off the one red device i see will connect over toslink or coax to the prism orpheus. this doesn’t work.

in any case, i can’t see how to get the red to send music to the orpheus.

i should note that the orpheus works properly when connected via optical or coax to a cd transport. that is, the optical and coax inputs work correctly in this case.

is there some additional setting i need to make in the config to give me the ability to stream to EITHER the bifrost dac OR to the prism orpheus? the only change i had to make to get the bifrost to work was to select the bifrost roon-ready option in the config.

i can send screenshots if that helps narrow down the problem.

thanks

What do you mean by “not successful”? What are you seeing.

If you are connecting via toslink or Coax and the Red shows up as a zone are you playing on that zone? Since the DAC is only receiving optical/coax audio signal (no data) it would be the RED that would receive the data and show up as a zone. Which is one of the devices you are seeing. The second device is also the RED but, because there is a data connection to the Bifrost2, the RED is passing that back to Roon server. Each of them “should” function as an end point I would think. You just need to enable the “RED” zone and make sure the sample rate is correct for the DAC to accept it.

Also, as far as I am aware the Bifrost 2 is “Roon Tested” not “Roon Ready”

thanks for the quick response, and the corrections. yes, roon-tested, not -ready.

the problem was on the orpheus side: i hadn’t enabled s/pdif input.

i’ll declare this problem solved. and thanks again.

thanks - problem solved. (wish they were all that easy)
