For a couple of weeks now I’ve been having problem with Roon app on my 2022 16" MacBook Pro with M1 processor, running macOS 12.6.1 (Monterey)
My Core is running on Synology NAS, DSM 7.1. Been running on this configuration for a few years with no issues. Upgraded Synology DSM from 6.x to 7.x earlier in the year, upgraded Mac a few months ago, again with no issues.
A couple of weeks ago noticed that starting Roon app on Mac takes forever. Around a minute, while before it’d take just a few seconds. And often it would it not even come up and just hang.
I kept the app and the server to the latest version, and today in fact was prompted to upgrade once again, which I did. After that, unable to start the app.
So, decided to uninstall and reinstall. Trashed Roon.app, Roon and RaatServer folders from ~/Users/Library.
Downloaded Roon.dmg, and started it up. Dragged Roon.app icon to Applications folder. The copy started.
Right there I saw the problem. The copy stalled, and not just that, it hang the entire Finder service, rendering my Mac virtually useless.
Stopping the copy took many minutes. Once stopped Mac sprang back to life.
Tried rebooting the Mac and do the install again. Same problem.
iOS app on iPhone and iPad - no issues.
Did anyone experience this? Is there a problem with the app on M1 MacBook Pro?
I’m running the Roon app on M1 Macbook Air and 1 M2 Macbook Air both using Monterey – no issues at all. Have you tried deleting the Roon directory from the Library folder? To access it from Finder hold down the option key and choose Library from the Go menu.
I realize it’s unhelpful when people say “it works fine for me”, but I’m on an M2 MBAir / Ventura and everything works fine. My core is a ROCK, so not sure it’s helpful but I’m happy to try and help if I can, but sounds like you have some sort of system process that is hanging. One random question… if you go into system monitor and find a process called “coreaudiod” and force kill it when your system is hanging, does that do anything? I had problems with that on my system & a directly connected DAC, which I can explain if that has a positive response.
I managed to make it work. I suppose I just didn’t wait long enough. It took 30 minutes for Roon.app to get copied to Applications folder.
Once it did, I started the app, and it took a full minute for it to come up. I’ve almost given up again, but then decided to wait. Ultimately the UI did appear.
Now the app starts quickly, as before.
I wonder if this initial slowness has something to do with Rosetta emulation (Intel-to-M1), which initially takes a long time, but once compiled, caches the executable, so that the subsequent initiations are much quicker.
Can you install a remote on your phone / tablet / another device and see if the time lag to open is similar? I’m wondering if you are having an issue with the core on your NAS or the remote.
I’m probably also out if my depth so I’m guessing someone in @support will need to help you with this.
I would like to take a look at your diagnostic logs as reported by your Mac remote. Can you please turn it on and make sure it stays on so I can do that?
I would be negligent if I didn’t follow up on what @Johnny_Ooooops said though. Is this issue isolated to the remote instance on your Mac or do mobile devices and other Roon Remote instances seem to be affected as well? As @BCBC mentioned, it’s concerning that copying a file is taking so long. Even a minute is too long if we’re dealing with a solid-state drive.
Thank you @Wes. There must have been something going on on my MacBook when I experienced the problem. A high IO process or something like it. I say IO and not CPU, because at the time I checked CPU and it was not doing a whole lot.
Whatever it was, I think it’s gone now, as I have not observed the issue in the past 24 hours.
Thank you, Wes. Still I think something isn’t right. This is what I’m observing right now:
When I start Roon Client on my Mac after some hours of non-use (say 3-4), it takes some time for it to come up. Maybe 40 seconds. By now I know though, so I just wait.
Ultimately it does come up, and using it is just fine, no issues.
If I quit the app, and start it again within minutes (say 10-20), it starts quickly - within 5 seconds.
I considered perhaps my NAS gets dormant, and when Roon triggers action, it takes some time for it to wake up and start serving.
However, if that was true, it seems I should experience similar issue on other Client devices, such as iPhone or iPad. Reality is, I do not. On both the app connects and starts up virtually immediately. I could not use Roon for hours, and when I start the app on the iPhone or iPad it comes up right away.
So, I think there is something about macOS. And by the way, I only started to experience this problem relatively recently, less than a month. Before, the app would come up right away on Mac just like on the mobile devices.
