What are the make and model of the affected audio device(s) and the connection type?

· Denafrips Arce Streamer (ethernet). Imac 24" (M3, 2023) with Roon Core. 16gb memory. Sonoma 14.7, 1TB storage (380gb used)

Describe the issue

Set up - Denafrips Arce streamer connected by ethernet. Roon Core on 2024 Imac connected by ethernet. approx 700mbs. Qobuz sometimes stalls or skips tracks with the message 'Qobuz media loading slowly'. Previously the Imac was connected via wifi and the problem was worse. with ethernet the problem is much less but still persists once in a while. I have logged out of Qobuz and logged back in and I am monitoring to see if this helps.

Describe your network setup

Modem is SPECTRUM EN 2251 (Hitron technolgies). Router is TP link Archer ax 21/ AX 1800

Previously via wifi Qobuz constantly stalling. Got my Imac/ Roon core connected via ethernet with approx 700 mb download speed. Qobuz more stable for 2 months. Recently noticed Qobuz stalling again although not as often as when it was connected via wifi. Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot? thank you

What is your playback device and how is it connected?

That message has a very generic broad meaning on Roon’s part.

It is a Denafrips Arce streamer that outputs to a Denafrips Dac. Streamer connected to internet via ethernet also.thanks

Hello @thomas_barnes,

Thanks for reaching out with your message!

For us to be able to better assist you, can we kindly ask that you resubmit a proper support ticket by filling out the questionnaire using the below link?

Please select the option that best matches your specific issue type instead of simply selecting “other”, as this form was created to help diagnose issues while gathering information and it will allow the support team to be able to best assist with your specific issue type.

Thank you!

Hey @thomas_barnes,

Thanks for running through the typeform!

We were able to review a fresh diagnostic report from your Roon Server, and see the stoppages happening:

Trace: [.NET ThreadPool Worker] [DENAFRIPS] [raatclient] GOT [202] {"samples":49920,"status":"Dropout"}
Warn: [Worker (1)] [ARCE 1] [zoneplayer/raat] Too many dropouts (>3s dropped out in the last 30s). Killing stream
Trace: [Worker (1)] [ARCE 1] [zoneplayer/raat] too many dropouts. stopping stream

A few immediate next steps to test:

  • Restart your server and Denafrips DAC.
  • Ensure the DAC’s firmware is up to date.
  • Try disabling DSP in Roon to reduce the processing load.

Since the issue only occurs over Qobuz content, it may be worth testing out different DNS servers.

We have seen users have a better experience in the past if they change their Router’s DNS servers from the ISP provided ones to Cloudflare DNS, Quad9 or Google DNS. Can you please give this a try and let me know if it helps?

Hi
I don’t have a separate server. I have Roon Core on Imac and some albums on hard drive connected to Imac.

  1. I will restart the Imac
  2. Router’s DNS setting was already 8.8.8.8. I have now changed primary DNS to 1.1.1.1 and secondary to 8.8.8.8
  3. firmware of Denafrips streamer + dac are up to date
  4. DSP in Roon is already disabled.

Hi @thomas_barnes,
Have you seen any improvement after restarting and changing the DNS?

I will test it next few days and let you know. thanks

Hi @thomas_barnes,
We’ll be on the lookout for your update on whether the new DNS makes a difference. Fingers crossed it helps!

so far it is behaving well. haven’t had a huge amount of time to check it thoroughly yet thgough.

Hi @thomas_barnes ,

Thanks for the update, do let us know how it goes!

Last night listening to a high res file , the Qobuz problem re occurred. Wish I could fix this.
thank you

Hi @thomas_barnes,
Can you tell us what track you were listening to when the problem happened again?

was listening to album ONE DEEP RIVER by Mark Knopfler (Qobuz) 192khz/ 24bit. Not sure the track that skipped though. thanks

Hey @thomas_barnes,

Thanks for sharing the timestamp!

Based on the logs, they indicate that the audio stream stopped due to repeated network-related failures while trying to fetch the Qobuz stream. We see repeated ConnectionReset and net_http_ssl_connection_failed errors when Roon attempted to retrieve the track from Qobuz’s servers.

Roon was unable to download required audio blocks from Qobuz, leading to a situation where playback could not continue smoothly. We then saw an error rid:649 error response: 999 which usually indicates a failure in retrieving data, possibly due to network timeouts or server unavailability.

This then follows:

Trace: [Worker (5)] [ARCE 1] [zoneplayer/raat] too many dropouts. stopping stream
Info: [Worker (3)] [audio/env] [zoneplayer -> stream] All streams were disposed
Warn: [Broker:Transport] [zone ARCE 1] Track Stopped Due to Slow Media

Roon couldn’t keep up with real-time playback because of the missing data.

Do you have any active firewalls on the Mac? If you temporarily disable them, do you still run into issues?

Or, perhaps reviewing your router settings and checking if you’re able to allocate network priority to your Mac running Roon Server - that may help as well. Let us know the results! :raised_hands:

thanks for the detective work! I have now allocated network priority to the Imac so let’s see.
pls advise.-
FIREWALL. Mac’s own firewall is off but in TP link router settings I found a firewall setting called ‘SPI firewall’ which is checked. Is that another firewall? Should I uncheck it?
thanks,
Thomas

Hey @thomas_barnes,

Thanks for the prompt follow-up!

Router firewalls are certainly important - keep it checked, on and active. This firewall helps protect your network by monitoring incoming and outgoing traffic. I don’t believe there are any granular options to make adjustments to this firewall, so keeping it enabled is our best bet!

Definitely keep us updated on how things perform with additional network allocation! We’ll be monitoring for your reply :+1:
