Description of Issue

Playback from Qobuz has started to becomei intermittent and it gives the Qobuz is loading Slowly message.

Happens at different resolutions as the other night I was able to play nothing.

This has happened on wired and wireless endpoints. Core is wired to my network.

Since having Qobuz I never had any playback issues other than the recent gapless one that affected lots of users… This has only started over the last few weeks since the last version of Roonand upgrading Rock to the latest. My network is fine nothing else is affected, playback via BluOS and Qobuz is unaffected this is purely Roon. Playback of all local media is fine. A reboot of the core clears it until it returns.

This seems like it might be some sort of memory leak or caching issue. Could my SSD be on the way out? Looking at my logs its not filling the buffers, yet I have at the time plenty of internet bandwidth and network bandwidth available at the time.

I think I have solved this issue. I was getting it really bad last night and it was affecting Qobuz app as well as all other apps that have Qobuz. It’s also been very intermittent. So I decided to I change my DNS which is NextDNS which I pay Everything has been fine since I switched to it until recently. So I changed to Google and it cleared up. But as it is intermittent could be a dodgy cable somewhere so will keep it on Google to see. So looks like somethings changed with my DNS provider side that coincided with changes to versions of Roon. I have put in a ticket with them as it I all used to work fine. Checking google it does seem there has been an increase with Qobuz issues with certain isp services so wonder if Qobuz made some changes their end that’s causing a wider problem.

Oh well it’s not DNS as it’s started again this evening. Will have to investigate further it’s been fine all day until now.

Just stabbing in the dark here, but maybe reduce bit depth to 24 bit in device setup, as it won’t gain anything else but processing load.

It’s not just this device it’s any as I explained. This is just one example of one I was using. It does it on ones that are 24bit only and no DSP. It’s very random too and nothing else is affected by any bandwidth loss when it happens it’s only Qobuz, my internet at the time has plenty of bandwidth and the network isn’t particular over taxed. It’s a hard one to nail down.

I have been having my logs fill up with this ‘[prebuffer] sleeping in read – this isn’t good’ when streaming any bitrate of qobuz files. SUPER frustrating.

Is it Qobuz? Is it Roon? Am I not paying enough for these services and they still have these problems? This has been happening more and more with the last release or two.

I don’t know where it lies but, it’s affected not just Roon for me on further investigation so still troubleshooting. I have been checking my internet connection with a broadband monitor and nothing really shows up as that would cause it or any different when it occurs. Internal network is fine and can stream anything no issues. Netflix and other Streaming video platforms all fine. Qobuz seems to be the only one. It’s fine for most of the time too but then it has spats for a few minutes and then stabilises. Not noticed it the last week, but not played Qobuz that much it’s been fine when I did.

Big problem here after updating.I wasn’t home for 5 weeks. It was running great for the last 2 years. Also with hqplayer. Now, after the update roon is broken. Is it possible to go back to an older version for now. Qobuz is soooooooo sloooow. Restart, only Qobuz in roon(all hard disk disabled). Still it took a day to show up with my Qobuz-Page in Roon. What’s wrong. And yes- stand-alone Qobuz App is running well.

Only, if you’ve got all devices’ installers downloaded locally to keep them on the same version.
You probably know, that old versions might not work anymore at some point, due to constant changes in Roon’s cloud computing structure.

And it’s stated to drop out again right now. God this is getting boring. This has to be qobuz. Router wa pulling down 5mb/ out of my 350 bandwidth, not uploading anything, network useage was minimal and internal speed tests all fine, internet speedtests show getting full bandwidth. Router doesn’t moan about low latency either. A few minutes and it’s back to normal. God knows what’s causing this. All my network diags show nothing that would cause issues. I think I need to try out wireshark or similar to see if I am getting some random broadcast or multicast storms but that would take the entire network down if it was happening.

Hi @Simon_Arnold3,

If you haven’t already or with your current network setup, please try loading content of various file types and qualities from the Qobuz app or web player, independent of Roon.

Diagnostics seem to corroborate your suspicion that the slowdown is with your connection to Qobuz’s servers. The buffer can’t keep up with playback because the connection to Qobuz is too slow.

If the web player struggles after a few minutes of continuous playback of high-quality files, then we can further isolate the issue.

Hi Connor, thanks for replying. It has happened with any flac res and has been very intermittent could go all day and then just start to have issues late at night not even peak times. I checked all my systems to check if anything was kicking off at these times they might affect internal bandwidth but could not find anything. Checked all my cabling and routing nothing showed up here either.

Further testing with other apps that had Qobuz integration at times Roon was struggling showed they also had issues with playback, this included BluOS, Qobuz app and UAPP on my DAP. It’s very odd as it would not affect any other streamer services nor local files nor video streaming which were all unaffected at times it would happen. In one session it happens I switched Roon to Radio Paradise as I don’t have any other streaming subs to see if this would be fine and that streamed fullres fine and via BluOS app fine, but Qobuz no.

It’s not done it recently although I have not been using Qobuz much of late to keep on top of it been catching up on my local music. Maybe it has and I just missed it as it’s so intermittent. Nothing has changed my side at all so this is either a local Qobuz issue for my region and I happen to be listening at the times of issue or it’s my ISP having some fits but as it didn’t affect anything else not sure. I don’t use their DNS servers as I subscribe to one, but also tried Google and Cloudflare at different times and it still happened. I know Qobuz just changed a lot of their infrastructure for downloadable stuff I wonder if this also affected other areas or their cdn was having issues?

I’ll keep an eye on it and report back if it crops up again.
