Hi guys
I’m a complete noob to Raspi, Roon and such.
Just installed roon core on my Synology 920+. As players (end points) I have my smartphone with Roon app (wifi connected) and a Raspi 4B with Ropieee and external USB DAC connected via powerline to my network. Also my movies are streamed via the same powerline connection without problems. So it should not be a bandwith problem.
While playing on my smartphone everything works fine.
While trying to play on my Raspi the connections to the Roon core gets lost every few seconds which stops playing and then does not automatically start playing again.
Since this only happens on the Raspi I presume it’s not a problem with the Roon core (otherwise the playback on the smartphone should show the same problems, right?).
The power line can on occasion be problematic. Test the Pi without going through the power line. Or if at all possible connect the Pi via WiFi and see how it behaves.
Roon does comment on Powerline solutions here, see following excerpt …
Ethernet Over Power (EoP)
The quality of Ethernet Over Power solutions varies quite a bit, and generally it will be less reliable than Ethernet. There are times it can work well, but if you’re having a problem and powerline ethernet is involved, we recommend temporarily replacing the ethernet over power connection with a real ethernet cable to see if things improve.
Does the RPi also vanish and reappear from the audio devices tab, or is your steam stopped, “only”?
Any more precise descriptions of on-screen messages and other circumstances would certainly help everyone to point you at a possible remedy…
For elimination purposes, temporarily try hardwired Ethernet and see if that’s any different, no matter if video streaming works flawlessly.
My several RPis, with Ropieee or other OSs and Roon bridge, work without dropping the connection/stream over 5GHz wireless, so you might also try that alternative.
I have two PI4 running ROPIEEE (XL) serving DACS connected via Powerline w/o issues. I also run a pi4 with a display that drops connection ever so often but regains it within seconds.
My suggestions should eliminate EoP if the issues remain after alternatives have been tried. The aim is to offer the OP a route to a possible solution. I myself have used EoP to good effect so I’m not against it. But it does need to be eliminated as a cause so support effort is directed appropriately.
Thanks guys for all the suggestions and hints.
I have now tested the RPi with a (quite long) network cable through half the flat directly connected to the WAN access (only 1 switch in between). Works perfectly.
I guess that means my powerline connection (devolo 1200+) is not good enough (tested both wired and wifi). But what other options would I have? I have no direct LAN access and Wifi signal from main router is too week where the RPi needs to be located… I used to work with a Squeezebox Touch before and that device never had any reception problems through the same technology. I’m quite lost momentarily…
By the way to answer above question:
Yes the RPi does just briefly vanish and reappear from autio devices.
You may just have to get a proper WLAN Router to attain better signal strength at your RPi’s location, and I’d recommend opting for the 5GHz band, then.
