Recommend graphics card for Gigabyte MB?

Afternoon all… having had a positive taste for Roon on my bespoke music server, as a result of the dreaded white minimising screen (INTEL chipset issue) I didn’t take up either of the subscription options. However, do any owners also with a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H motherboards who had the same issues have any suggestions for a cost effective 3rd party graphics card I could fit?

Many thanks in advance,
Pete

Hi Peter, any EVGA NVIDIA graphics card would probably do. The questions is not the motherboard actually, but your case and power supply which are more the limiting factors. As for personal recommendations, the best/cheap card I’ve use recently is the EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti. It has the benefit on not needing extra power from your power supply and is driven by the power supplied directly from the motherboard bus. About 110.00 USD from Amazon.

Many thanks for the feedback and suggestion Daniel. Space will indeed be an issue. I have a spare slot in the back of the case but due to a lack of internal space, I had planned to use a riser ribbon cable between the PCI slot and the card itself. As for whether the PSU is man enough, I’m not sure. I have run an Asus Xonar Essence STX II sound card when playing with SPDIF output rather than USB to my DAC, but quite whether that is a good pointer, I’m not sure.
Cheers
Pete

I have used one of those for years (still do) in my rig as a DAC going straight to some M-Audio monitors. It all sounds great near-field.

I have used several cards on my GA-Z77MX-D3H including:
Asus Gtx460
Gigabyte Radeon HD5450 low profile
Asus Radeon R9 280X
Palit GTX 1060
So I think every card that suits your needs should get the job done.

Cheers Marco… appreciate the additional suggestions

Just searching on Amazon and I have one of the cards linked below in my old desktop, bought new back in 2013. I’ve just ordered a PCI-E riser ribbon cable so I can test it in my server.

I don’t really need cutting edge graphics, I simply use the server for playing tunes and surfing the net, so if that works, I may look at the newer Sapphire card linked below:

All I’ll need then is for Roon to be kind enough to give me another trial to test it

I think @kevin handles subscription-related inquiries for Roon.

Hey @Peter_Evans, if you do end up purchasing a new graphics card, send an email to contact@roonlabs.com and we can arrange some extra time for you to test and confirm it’s working properly.

Many thanks guys… I’m just waiting for a pci-e ribbon riser cable to arrive via eBay and as soon as it does, I have a spare Sapphire HD 5450 card sat here ready to install and test :sunglasses:To be fair to the guys at Roon, they extended by trial so that I could test it in headless server mode with a Nexus 7, so they’ve been more than willing to help :point_up_2:

As way of an update, the pci-e ribbon cable which enables me to add the Sapphire HD5450 to my music server arrived today. Good news is that the combination successfully been fitted and is working. The only negative is that the server now doesn’t recognise my Chord Hugo TT linked to a usb card already fitted to one of the pci-express slots. However, by removing the usb lead to one of the motherboard usb slots gets things back to normal. Does anybody have a suggestion as to why it won’t recognise my DAC connected to the pci-express slot?

That aside, I’ll approach the chaps at Roon and see if they’d grant me another trial test the new set-up. Another update will follow in due course

With thanks to the chaps at Roon, my trial period has been restarted and I can happily confirm that the addition of this cheap and cheerful graphics card to my music server has cured the dreaded minimising white screen. So thanks to everybody here who added their input… I just need to hear a big enough difference between this and jRiver before I shell out the extra
